Entocort EC for IBD ?
I am having a "flare-up" with my IBD and my doctor prescribed Entocort EC. I am concerned about the fact that grapefruit can increase the amount of Entocort in my blood.

1) Can I eat grapefruit, and how much can I eat, and

2) Will I most likely be able to stop taking the medicine after my flare-up is over? I also take Pentasa.

hi x, I am a crohnie like yourself. I've been on Entocort for a awhile. I don't eat grapefruit as I don't want any problems. Ask your GI or pharmacist how much you can eat.

As for stopping the medication, I was told that I'd be on it for a lifetime unless a problem arises. Ask your GI about it.

"The most common side effects of ENTOCORT EC are headaches, infection in your air passages (respiratory infection), nausea, and symptoms of hypercorticism (too much steroids in your body). Symptoms of hypercorticism may include an increase in the size of the face and neck, acne and bruising. Most symptoms of too much steroids in your body occur less often with ENTOCORT EC than with other corticosteroids." from http://www.entocortec.com/Patient/

So I would think this would be overdosing. It shouldn't show up immediately however. But you might want to call your doctor.

crohn's, cholestyramine and entocort?
I have Crohn's and recently I thought of seeing a new gastroentrologist to see whether he has any new treatment for Crohn's. I use to take pentasa 500 mg 2 capsules 4 times a day. The only thing I had concern was going to rest room 5 to 6 times a day. The new doctor asked me to stop me taking pentasa and suggested I take Cholestyramine for a month. So far I am in 3rd week and that is making me go to rest room very often and most of the time the stools are floating. I think I should stop this as I am not feeling any better. He was going to start me on entocort after this. That medicine is so expensive and I want to know does it give any relief to Croh'ns disease and is it better than Prednisone. I am asking this because prednisone is cheap. Once I took bactrim for some other symptoms but it had helped to control going to rest room a lot.

Herbal remedies often work when drugs don't, and usually are much gentler on your system. If you consult a master or experienced herbalist (make sure choose one who has treated crohn's) they should be able to help you, maybe even cure your Crohn's, or at least manage it so you are more comfortable. Ask them about lobelia inflata and barberry bark, it might help your case. Also chickweed (organic) fresh or steamed.

Have you checked into Jordan Rubin? He had Crohn's disease as well. He suffered a longtime until his father found an herbal remedy. He is now living a normal healthy life. Check out his book Maker's Diet. It might help. :) God Bless and good luck.

I have Crohn's, and I'm on entocort ec 9mg daily, why do I have to taper off of it? been taking it for 3 month

When you take something for that long your body gets used to having the drug in the same amounts all the time. If you just stop taking it or taper off to quickly your body will experience withdrawl symptoms and you will get very sick. Its just like when an alcoholic stops drinking. They have to taper off or they could die from alcohol withdrawl. If you have any other questions you should consider asking a pharmacist. They know a lot about drug and dosages. They can explain exactly what a drug does to your body.

Can I drink alcohol if i am taking Entocort and Asacol?
I have Crohn's Disease, and I have never drank before, but I was wondering if I do drink (because I am sick of being the DD) will it effect me with my medicine?
Please don't tell me not to drink, just answer if it is effected.

Entocort may increase the dizziness you'll get with alcohol..but really that's kinda harmless. Now with asacol if you start drinking like a lot on a regular basis it could increase your chances of stomach bleeding. But really I just say be safe, and don't go overboard with drinking and you should be alright :)

LIPASE LEVEL HIGH!!!!!!?
My lipase level is 953. I am on entocort ec for my Crohn's disease and also was taking Imuran but doc took me off it after resolts came back.She said i should be fine and that they will just find other med for me to take.Is that level too high? Should i be worried?

Are there any programs that assist with prescription cost?
I am unemployed and uninsured. I have talked with social services and all I could do was apply for medicaid which they felt I would not get. I am on a community care plan which takes care of my medical needs, but not the prescriptions. I was diagnosed with crohn's disease a few days ago and the drug prescribed, Entocort EC, is outrageously expensive (around $800) and there is no way I can afford that. So I'm looking for some program that will offer me assistance or any suggestions on what to do. I appreciate any input.

White-coated toungue and weird/almost bitter taste in mouth?
Hello,

Can anyone provide some insight to this? I have been taking 2 oral meds: Doryx(Doxycycline) and Entocort EC everyday since early-mid June, and just this week a couple days ago, I started to get a weird taste in my mouth and a white coat on my tongue, especially the back of it...
Any info??

Sounds like thrush. That is basically a yeast infection/overgrowth in your mouth.
The antibiotics kill off bacteria throughout your system, including the 'good' bacteria that naturally live in the mouth [and vagina like another answer said]. Without those bacteria your body has a hard time keeping the yeast in check, it overgrows and you might get thrush or vaginal yeast infection.
Talk to your doctor, they can give you antifungal medication to get rid of it. For now drink a lot of water and try not to eat much sugary food or at least rinse your mouth out well afterwards [yeast lives on sugar].

Does this sound like a perianal abscess?
Hello, I was told i had crohns's Disease over a year ago and since then have lost a lot of weight. I can't really get to my doctor like I should because I have 5 kids and nobody to help me. I have been on Entocort EC (9mg) since january and Asacol (on and off)

Well, the thing is that I have a lot of hemorrhoids (inside and out). I always got them when I was pregnant but since my last child who is 3 they have not gone away. Sometimes they aren't painful but they are still there. I always have lose bowels and haven't had a formed one in about 2 years. Anyway my concern is that I went to the bathroom which is pretty much always painful because of the hemorrhoids and I was cleaning myself and applying a cold rag. I started to push around the area of the hemorrhoids and I felt something hard in between my rectum and tail bone towards the right side. I pressed on the left side in the same spot to see if it was just something on the inside that is normal but didn't feel anything on that side so I pressed on the right side again. It feels pretty large and there is some pain when I press. It is not bulging out and if I never started pushing around I would have never known it was there. I started to google about abscesses and read about the painful surgery to drain it. I have very bad anxiety and am freaking out now. I want to know if it's possible to just ask the doctor for antibiotics and if it could pop and drain on it's own? Like i mentioned at this time i do not have help with my kids and can't go through the pain I read about when they drain it and I will never take pain medication that is stronger then Tylenol. I don't like feeling funny and don't want to become addicted to anything. Plus I have my kids I have to be alert for.

Is this something that I can just leave and it will resolve on it's own if I take antibiotics until I can do something when I would have help with my kids. Sorry about any typo's or if something doesn't make sense but I am having really bad anxiety right now because of this.

I went to my GI doctor today and he tried to give me a rectal exam but I had to ask him to stop because of the pain. Like I mentioned, I have a lot of hemorrhoids on the outside (painful) and on the inside. I'm not sure if he was able to feel what I was complaining about. I showed him how it is draining in the pad that I had on. He took some blood and told me that he really needs to do a colonoscopy and i really need to find someone to watch the kids. That is going to be impossible till October so I don't know what to do. He prescribed Flagel (metronidazole) 250 mg. 4 times a day. I am still having anxiety about what it can be and I was thinking if it was something very serious he would have sent me to the hospital but then I am thinking maybe because I am letting him know I don't have anyone to watch my children that that's the reason he didn't send me. When I stand it feels like a throbbing headache and after going to the bahroom it hurts for a while but when I sit I am ok. He mentioned something about a fistula but from what I read it sounds like a abscess. Does anyone have any ideas or can assure me that i will be ok until I can let him look with the scope in Oct. I am having so much anxiety that I can;t eat and am losing weight from that now and not the crohn's.

You need to find someone to watch your children for a couple of hours and someone that can drive you back and forth from the colonscopy. The problem might be a prolapsed rectum. This might be what you're feeling and not an abscess. Either way, you need it cared for now, not in October. An abscess is full of infection and a prolapse caught early enough can be fixed without surgery. If either of these conditions get any worse before then you might end up in the hospital for days, and not hours. Your priority should be your children, but what happens when you can't help them anymore? When mommy is sick the entire family suffers. The stress alone will and is eating at your health. You're losing weight from too much anxiety related stress which weakens the immune system. You have 5 children that will suffer when mommy gets swine flu because her immune system was weak and 1 child came down with it, now the entire family has swine flu, what happens then? Please reevaluate your situation right now. A simple out patient procedure now can save you from allot more intense things going wrong later. Consider the children's highest priority first YOU. If it is a Perianal abscess you would want it treated via surgical drainage. These days the abscess is most likely caused by e-coli or mrsa in that region. I would have it checked, especially since those types of abscesses can burrow deeper as opposed ot working their way to the surface. Best of luck.
