How long does the fluconazole stays in your body?
I'm taking fluconazole (diflucan) to treat a yeast infection and my doctor told me that fluconazole can lower the efficiency of birth control pills. How long after I took the fluconazole will the birth control have the same effect?

Short answer: use backup birth control at least until you have your next period.

Long answer:
According to Diflucan prescribing information, the effect on oral contraceptives is variable, in some patients the birth control may actually increase in concentration, but in some other patients, the birth control levels may actually decrease. It is also important to note that fluconazole has a very long half-life, so it may remain effective in the body for over a week. So here's the issue, it is possible that the fluconazole would decrease the birth control effectiveness long enough for you to ovulate at any point for about a week after taking the Diflucan. Add to this the time that you may remain fertile afterwards, and you end up with an extremely variable window that you could become pregnant.

I hope this helps!

Fluconazole vs. Itraconazole?
My dermatologist prescribed me itraconazole but the pharmacy gave me fluconazole. Is there a difference? Should I not be taking the fluconazole?

They are both antifungals with the same mechanism of action hence do the same thing. However Fluconazole is generally associated with less side effects in comparison to itraconazole. Another reason is that fluconazole may be the cheaper alternative or may have been the only type of azole medication the pharmacy stocked. Otherwise it is safe to take the fluco.

Ensure you notify the doctor if you feel unusually tired, nauseous or are not eating or if you notice dark urine, pale faeces or yellowing of the whites of eyes.

Good Luck.

  Hi

You have just mentioned that it stings- what about the relief? Is it worth taking the medicine for the relief it has provided you?

If not switch over to natural cures for yeast infection treatment which are based on natural ingredients and are completely safe for use. These do not produce any harmful side effects.

Fluconazole is the same thing as Diflucan.
No, taking Diflucan/fluconazole will not decrease the effectiveness of your birth control pills. You don't need a "back -up" method because you are taking fluconazole. But, since no method of birth control other than abstinence is 100% you may want to think about using condoms with your pills if you are not already doing so would "back up" your birth control giving you additional protection and peace of mind in preventing pregnancy. Also, your pills do not offer any protection against STD's and condoms do. It never hurts to use a back-up method. Ask your pharmacist and your prescribing doctor if you want to be sure.

Fluconazole?
So I took a Fluconazole 150 mg this afternoon. Would it be alright to drink alcohol tonight?

I don't think there are any interactions between Fluconazole and Ethanol.

The problem is alcohol is contra-indicated when you have a yeast infection. I would wait until the infection is gone, not because of a drug interaction but because of the infection itself.

Copied From a website, see source below:
"Yeast infections may also be caused by the birth control pill, immune compromise (which allows opportunistic infections like candidiasis to occur), immune-suppressing steroid medications, parasitic infections, diabetes and consuming excess carbohydrates, sugar or alcohol."

how long does fluconazole actually take to start reducing the symptoms for a yeast infection?
I have never had a yeast infection before, unfortunately i was prescribed some antibiotics for a urinary tract infection, and the side effect was lo and behold...a yeast infection! I was given fluconazole by my doctor, but the itching that accompanies a yeast infection along with the nasty looking white, thick discharge has taken a while to dissipate. It is now, the fourth day since i took the fluconazole and my symptoms barely seem to be improving...so, i was wondering if normally fluconazole takes a while before it begins clearing up the uncomfortable symptoms that come with a yeast infection. I've read information on this, and the majority states that it DOES indeed take about 3-5 days to start making some serious improvements...is this really the case?

Hello, having personally suffered the same thing you are, and also being a registered nurse that looks after people with infectious diseases ( which is infections) I do understand what you are going through.

Firstly fluconazole is certainly a drug for yeast infections however it is an unusual one to be prescribed first off. Its almost like killing an ant with a huge sledgehammer!!!

It does take at least three doses of any type of antibiotic or antifungal to see improvements. For this to really be fast though usually a pessary (small medicated capsule that is inserted into your vagina at night) is prescribed.

The latest treatment is one pessary, once only, and the same medication that is in the pessary is also given as a cream to stop external inflammation and itching.

This treatment however uses a different drug - cotrimoxazole. If you note.. the last part of that drug is "zole" which is the same as your fluconazole... it is in the same class of drugs.

If you do not start seeing improvements then go back to your dorctor or to your pharmacy, I am here in Australia and the drug that I have mentioned can be bought over the counter.

Good luck. I know how it feels.

Why is it so hard to get my Doctor to prescribe Fluconazole to me?
I have had some reoccuring yeast infections and have used the 7 day stuff and it just doesn't work. So I have been getting the Fluconazole from my Doctor the past couple of times and it has worked. So why is he now saying he doesn't want to give it to me anymore? Is it dangerous? What gives?

pregnant? nursing? possibly taking a drug that would affect it? maybe he thinks you're using it for a reason you shouldn't be or getting it for someone else? doesn't seem dangerous, but maybe he feels you might be dependant?

Will fluconazole show up on a drug test or create a false positive?
The last time I took Fluconazole was September 15 and I just had a drug test on October 3rd for a job.

So im taking fluconazole and went out drinking?
So im taking fluconazole and went out drinking, but only after 12 hours since my last dose. So i skipped a dose that night to make sure i didn't mess my liver up. Am i good If i start back the next nite?

I wouldn't take it just yet, as it blocks your liver from filtering certain substances/medications, which causes the substance/medication to stay in your body longer, sometimes up to 3 days. You shouldn't even have drank while on that med. Why play games with your liver and your health/illness when you don't really know what will happen? Anyways, I can't find anything that says it blocks alcohol from the liver, so unless you're still buzzed form the alcohol, I would think it would be safe to go ahead and take it. Call a pharmacy first, they know of interactions better than I do.

Is it normal to feel increased symptoms on Fluconazole?
I was given one single dose pill of Fluconazole (Diflucan) today to treat my yeast infection.
I don't know if it's all in my head, but it appears that my itchiness and sore feelings are increased.
If it helps, I've cut back on sugar and yeast since taking the pill this morning.
I was going to take two "Yum Yum Acidophilus" chewables, but I don't want to mess with the Diflucan if I can help it. Will that be a problem?
Thanks so much for your help!

Usually when taking an anti fungal medication such as fluconazole, your symptoms will get worse before they get better. This is because as the yeast/fungal cells are being killed off they release all their toxins into the body at once, hence the symptoms increase temporarily. However once all the yeast/fungal cells have been eradicated then your symptoms should subside and your yeast infection should clear up.

Also, it is completely okay to take probiotic supplements while on fluconazole (in your case that would be the Yum Yum Acidophilus). Fluconazole is an anti fungal and it has no effect on bacteria. Probiotics are friendly bacteria so they have no effect on fluconazole. Actually I recommend taking probiotics while on anti fungal medications because you want to try and get the microbial ecosystem within your body back in balance so the yeast doesn't have any room to grow again.

Good luck!

How long does fluconazole take to cure a yeast infection?
My gyno diagnosed me with a yeast infection on the 24th. She prescribed me a pill called "fluconazole" to treat it. Her directions were to take the first pill that same day, and take the second pill 3 days later, which was today. She also said to buy vagisil external itch cream for my itching and irritation.

Well the itching and irritation has gone away, most likely because of the vagisil though. How long do I have to wait until I know my yeast infection is completely gone?

Your symptoms usually go away with in 3 days after the start of the medication, and unless it was a bad yeast infection it should be cleared up in 7 days.

Good luck!

How long does it take for fluconazole orally 150mg tablet to cure a yeast infection? I took the one time only pill, the dosage one week ago - on Wed Jan 16. And I think my yeast infection is gone, but I'm not sure exactly...I never had a yeast infection before (I'm 21 years old) so I don't know.

And also how long will it be until I can have sex again with my boyfriend? Thank you.

Might the medications fluconazole and cefadroxil ?
delay a period?

No! the fluconazol was given to you to get rid of the yeast caused by the imbalance of the PH in the normal flora for your vagina due to the bacterial infection for which you were prescribed the antibiotic cefadroxil. Neither of which will cause your period to be late

There are no adverse interactions when both drugs are taken together, however if you're taking it to treat fungal infections, one drug would be enough.
