Can you take acetaminophen and naproxen sodium at the same time?
Can you take acetaminophen and naproxen sodium for pain at the same time.? My father takes 8 acetaminophen tablets a day for arthritis and had a fall. Can he take naproxen sodium also?

Yes you can take those meds together, they are from completely different families of drugs. Although I would not recommend continuing either of them for a long period of time. Long term use of acetaminophen can cause liver damage, but not addictive. Naproxen is an anti inflammatory which will help your father with any pain or swelling he may have right after his fall, it to is not a narcotic or additive but it can damage the lining in the stomach causing pain with possible GI bleed if used long term.

is naproxen sodium the same as ibuprofen?
I was just curious if anyone knew if naproxen sodium is the same as ibuprofen or motrin. I want to make sure of side effects before I take anything.

When I take Ibuprofen I never notice any side effects but, naproxen makes my stomach hurt sometimes.

equaline naproxen sodium seems MUCH less effective than other naproxen products. Has anyone else noticed this?
my gout was very much in control with allopurinol and another brand of naproxen..it came back fairly quickly when I switched to equaline brand (for cost).

Naproxen vs. Naprelan? Anyonw know the difference?
The doctor gave me samples of Naprelan (naproxen sodium) for pain. Is there any difference or effect between regular non-prescription Naproxen (Alleve).

what is naproxen sodium, and can i mix it with other pain relievers?
i have a killer toothache.... hurts so much i'm having a hard time opening my eyes... which makes driving difficult and my dentist told me to take 2 tylenol and 2 advil every 4 hours.... now i found some ibuprofen, so that covers the advil... but i don't have any acetaminophen, but i did find some naproxen sodium...
i just don't want to give myself liver failure or something.

Naproxen sodium (Aleve) is excellent for toothache. When you do combinations of pain relievers for acute pain (like toothache), you hit different pain receptors and have a better chance of reducing the discomfort.

First of all - it is safe to take 800 mg of ibuprofen at a time up to 3 times a day for a daily total of 2400 mg. This is the same dose as the prescription strength motrin. If you increase it to this dose, you will definitely feel better. Ibuprofen is primarily excreted by the kidneys.

You can still add the Tylenol if you need to after 2 hours, but it doesn't have anti-inflammatory properties.

If you take 2 of the over the counter Aleve (which is roughly the same as the prescription dose of Anaprox), DON'T repeat it every four hours. This medication is longer lasting, so you can only take it every twelve hours.

Please make sure you eat something before taking the higher doses of anti-inflammatories - they tend to tear up an empty stomach.

Good luck, and hope you feel better!

Can I take naproxen sodium and excedrin?
I am wondering if it's safe to take naproxen sodium (Aleve) and Excedrin (acetaminophen) together. Excedrin also has caffiene in it, I believe.
Lisa

Reply
I do believe that Excedrin also has aspirin in it as well as acetaminophen and caffeine. Since aspirin is an NSAID (Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug) as is naproxen I would suggest asking your doctor or your pharmacist about taking both at the same time as it is usually recommended you avoid combining NSAID's.

My father is taking Naproxen Sodium (Skelan) is it harmful for the liver?
My father has a history of fatty liver and he is taking Naproxen Sodium (Skelan) 3 times a week to help him exercise. Does taking Namproxen Sodium outweighs the benefits due to the fact of his liver condition?

All I can say is Naproxen is used for all forms of arthritis, inflammatory disorders, gout, back pain, ankylosing spondylitis, bone pain, period pain, migraine and general pain relief. It should be used with caution in psychiatrically disturbed patients, epilepsy, severe infection, heart failure and kidney disease. And do not take if suffering from peptic ulcer at present or in recent past, If your due for surgery (including dental surgery), Suffering from bleeding disorders or anaemia, Or suffering from proctitis.(suppository only).
Common side effects are stomach discomfort, diarrhoea, constipation, heart burn, nausea, headache, dizziness. Unusual side effects are blurred vision, stomach ulcer, ringing noise in ears, retention of fluid, swelling of tissue, drowsiness, itch rash, shortness of breath. Severe but rare effects (stop medication, consult a doctor): Vomit blood, pass blood in faeces, other unusual bleeding, asthma induced by medication. It also has interactions with other drugs and must not be used with anticoagulants (eg. warfarin), probenecid, diuretics, lithium, methotrexate, beta blockers, ACE inhibitors.

How to treat an allegic reaction to naproxen sodium (aleve)?
So, I found out I was allergic to aleve a few months ago when my lips swelled and I broke out in hives. And I've avoided taking it since until yesterday when I took Midol which contained naproxen sodium. Last time I went to the doctor and they gave me a steroid treatment. But I want relief today but my doctor is closed on a sunday! Does benedryl make a difference? I have the tablets and Ive been using ice on my lips.
Thanks!

Is Naproxen Sodium available over the counter as a suppository? If not, can gelcaps be used intrarectal?
I'm not always able to eat as much or as often as I need to in order to take Naproxen, which I do for Arthritis. While I certainly wouldnt make this a common route, I'm interested in this as a backup for erratic schedules, nausea, etc. Please qualify your answers with a source

to my knowledge, indomethacin is the only non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent that comes in a suppository. not sure if the gelcaps would work as they're designed to dissolve in the stomach
which is highly acidic (pH 1.6). have you tried relafen (nabumetone) ? it may be taken in
a single 1000mg dose. if you're experiencing nausea and anorexia, i suggest you look to the
naproxen as it commonly causes GI upset. in fact, the most common side affect of all NSAID's
is GI upset. you may find relafen to be easier on your stomach than naproxen.

Swollen lips are a sign of an allergic reaction. You need to get medical attention. There is a chance that a severe reaction could develop and effect you breathing. Take some Benadryl to halt the reaction, and see a doctor.

What is the difference between Naprolen and Naproxen?
My previous doctor RX'd me naproxen and then I switched doctors and this new one RX'd me naprolen just now. I webmd'd this and it said that naprolen IS naproxen. He knows I'm on naproxen, so why'd he RX me what seems like the same thing?

Is it safe to take both naproxen & tylenol? Naproxen at night and tylenol during the day?
I need the naproxen for an inflamed piriformis muscle. but tylenol does me better as far as pain goes. The 550 naproxen does't begin to do a thing for pain.

It is ok to take both. However, naproxen seems like a real weak med for inflamed muscle. In my opinion the best med for inflamed muscle is Ibuprofen, it helps so well. I , myself would take 400 to 600 mg of Ibuprofen, it really helps. Naproxwn never worked for me either. Hopes this helps.

How long does it take Naproxen gastrointestinal effects to subside?
I took Naproxen 3 days ago at midnight. I woke up with horrible wrenching stomach pains. I do not take naproxen regularly. I did take it with a bowl of cereal. However, it is now 3 days later, and I'm still feeling horrible pains of gas and acid indigestion, which by the way is way worse starting at 4am in the morning. I went to urgent care and they said it was the Naproxen. How long does it take to get over this?

You need to get something to help coat your tummy like Mylanta or Peptobismal until it subsides. It could of been an allergic reaction too. Just give it a little time. Some people it only take s afew days to get over and others it can take up to a week. Try the Peptobismal when you feel the upset coming on and it should help. You have to be really careful with Naproxen. Taking it with milk or some bread helps to buffer it in the tummy.

What is considered long term use of naproxen?
Hi, I have reactive arthritis and I take sulfasalazine and naproxen 500 mg a day. I see all these postings that say risk of long term use for using naproxen includes gastrointestinal and Cardiovascular risks which increase with long term duration. However what they dont say is what is considered long term? Ive been on Naproxen since Jan. When should I start being concerned ? What are the signs?

Naproxen is dangerous medication. I've taken it before in Aleve, and to be honest, it works really well, but it actually gives me heart pain. I tested this by discontinuing and starting it over, and the pain returned.

Naprelan is a brand name for sustained-release naproxen. Naproxen is the generic name for the drug. Basically naprelan is a long acting version of naproxen.

Its like buying Cheerios versus the generic store brand honey-crunch O-rings.

Other anti-inflammatories include ibupofen (Advil,motrin, generic,etc)

How much naproxen can I take and how often?
I've suffered chronic migraines for my entire life, though the last year or two they've gotten particularly bad. My doctor is trying to get me away from Imatrex, because I'm taking it ALL the time. Mixing naproxen, acetaminophen and fexmid?
I have a lot of muscle pain that flares up occasionally. I had a prescrip for 500 mg of vimovo (naproxen and esomerprazole magnesium) and Fexmid 7.5 mg (cyclobenzaprine). I took the naproxen thinking it was a muscle relaxer and then took two 500 mg of acetaminophen. I checked the internet to make sure that was not a problem and it looks okay. But i would like to take the fexmid (muscle relaxer) but do not want to have an interaction. Anyone know about this? Thanks for your help.

You can't get high on them. Yes, they are pain relievers but they are just Aleve. So they are like aspirin or tylenol. Not the kind of pain relievers you can get stoned on. They are NSAIDS not narcotics. If you take too much you will get a horrible stomach ache and you will have trouble breathing.

How would you compare Naproxen to Hydrocodone for pain relief?
I recently had some Hydrocod-APAP 325mgs from my motor vehicle accident, but recently ran out. I found some Naproxen 500mg in my medicine cabinet and wanted to ask experienced people's opinions on how the pain relief feels different.

I understand that Hydrocodone is an opiate analegic and Naproxen is an anti-inflammatory, but I would still like to see how people compare the 2.

You can't compare them,, they are different and they effect your body different. One is for pain and the other is for inflammation.
Here is a good link you should check out for Rx info.
http://pdrhealth.com

And the 325 you are talking about in the hydrocodone is the Tylenol in it not the narcotic. You probably meant 5/325 which is 5 mg. of hydrocodone. I take hydrocodone, just a different strength every day for a spine injury

And I agree with the RN. If the naproxen provides pain relief you will be far better off taking it. Good luck

Can Naproxen Sodium tablet dissolve in a hot cup of water or tea?
For any women out there that does this, if you know the answer, please share it with me and for other women out there. Yes I take it for MCramps as a prescription. I ask this because even you swallow with water, I also want to know if it dissolves quickly in your hot tea to save from swallowing it.

Naproxen (anti-inflammatory) for pain or swelling... premarin estrogen pills) for contraception, for estrogen replacement therapy or just for regulating periods... and estraderm as an additional (and more nearly human) skin or vaginal estrogen supplementation.

I'd guess you're talking about a menopausal woman or a woman who's had a total hysterectomy or double oophorectomy... but that's just a guess.

I would use Naproxen, Ibuprofen is good when there is inflammation, much the same as Naproxen.

The problem with any drug, even over the counter types, is that they all have side effects that can be worse than the symptom that you are trying to relieve.

Anyone that uses Ibuprofen on a regular basis should be aware that excessive use can be near fatal.
My brother in-law used Ibuprofen almost everyday for even the most minor pain. While it took several years he did develop an inability to produce platelets and then the ability to fight off infections.
He almost died and may well have died had he not received a bone marrow transplant.

I would, if I were a woman, just have a cup of camomile tea to relieve the cramps. I would be careful in taking it if I were to become pregnant.

Naproxen????

I herd from a couple people that it can cause stomach bleeding.
Can it?
Amanda

Reply
Yes, one of the effects of Naprosyn- naproxen sodium- is the possibility of stomach bleeding. However, that will be true of most of the pain relievers you would take, they are all known to be possible causes for stomach irritations. However, it is not a highly probably problem for you, given your age and the frequency of use. It's a problem much more associated with old age and constant high dose use, and when there are already stomach problems present- like ulcers. As long as you are careful to take it with food or milk, and aren't drinking alcohol, you won't likely have any problems like bleeding at all. When you are looking at the side effects and complications of taking medicines, you need to keep in mind that in drug studies, the pharmaceutical companies have to report EVERYTHING that was noted in the test population. Even if a problem only happened once in the test group of say a few thousand, it still has to be reported, even if it doesn't make sense at all- like somebody complaining they got a sore throat while taking a medicine to treat their knee pain. I also use Naprosyn a couple days a month, and have done so for years now. It works better for me than anything else, I only take a couple per day, for a max of 2-3 days. I suspect this is how you use it as well. Don't let your friends scare you. All medicines have some kind of side effects that must be listed on the inserts, it's the law. The trick is learning to read them and put the risks in some sense of proportion, and deciding how high the risk is versus what good it will do you. In this case, the risk of bleeding is low, and suffering is pretty much the only other choice. So take your naproxen with food or milk, and relax.

What is the best OTC pain reliever for a migraine?

I sympathize with you. I get migraines all the time. I use Excedrin migraine but since it contains aspirin i would count that one out for you. Tylenol would be my next pain reliever. Try drinking a cup of coffee with it. The caffeine will help constrict the blood vessels. Try a bag of ice on the side of your head and lay down in a dark cool room. This is what i use to get rid of mine. Hope you feel better soon!

pills making me nauseus?
ok.. so i got my two wisdom tooth removed all at once.. and the doctor gave me 3 different medicines: ampicillin(antibiotic), sodium naproxen(anti inflammatory) , and a pain killer.   antibiotics do change birth control efficiency. I would ask your doctor how long to wait before having sex again. Or use a condom. But I doubt you wanna have sex when your wisdom teeth just came out. and just take those painkillers and stay hiiiigh, you shouldn't feel any pain. unless you have the wrong ones, in which case ask your doctor for a painkiller that wont make you nauseous. good luck.

Are 1,250 mg of Ammonium Chloride and 570 mg of Sodium Citrate dangerous?
I usually robotrip using a certain product (whose only active ingredient is DXM) that ran out at the local store. Instead I bought another cough syrup that in each 5 mg has:
diphenydramine HCL (12.5 mg)
DXM HBR (15 mg)
pseudoephedrine hcl (30 mg)
ammonium chloride (125 mg)
sodium citrate (57 mg)
menthol (1 mg)

I'd usually take it so I'd get about 150 mg of DXM, but that means I'd get 1,250 mg of sodium citrate and 570 mg of sodium citrate, which I've never dealt with before. Would those 2 get me really sick.. and not be worth taking?

02/16/11
Reply
Ammonium Chloride is used as an expectorant, and the LD50 (lethal dose for 50% of the population) is 1650mg/kg. So unless you weigh under 1.5 pounds, you should be OK with 1250 mg.

There are three "sodium citrates," but trisodium citrate is the one usually meant when using the term.
Taken orally, it's used as an antacid. It is also used as tart-tasting food additive, including in some Ocean Spray juices.
It's generally considered harmless, unless you do something like eat a brick of it.

What's the difference between these pain pills?
I was taking Naproxen with Advil, but it made me feel sick to my stomach.

So, the doc put me on Sulindac with Advil, which made me even sicker to my stomach, along with some other bad side effects.

Now, he has given me Tramadol and I feel pretty good right now.

All they are in the same class of drugs or can someone give me some more insight as to the differences of Naproxen & Tramadol?

Anything special to watch out for?

Thanks for any help.

Naproxin and Advil are both NSAIDs or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. By taking both at once you are basically over-dosing because the two medications are so similar. I'm not familiar with Sulindac. But given your reaction, I guess it is a similar medication. Tramadol is not an NSAID. So you are not getting the overdose effect. Did you tell your doctor you were taking the Advil? If he knew you were taking it he shouldn't have prescribed another NSAID or he should have told you to stop taking the Advil. If you are taking multiple pain relievers, make sure they are not in the same class of drugs.

which is better vitamin c, sodium ascorbate or calcium ascorbate?
i went to healthy options store, looking for sodium ascorbate, however the sales assistant replied that they dont carry sodium ascorbate only calcium ascorbate, and besides according to the sales staff, its bad for the heart for those with with cardio vascular problems, due to its sodium (salt) content? it is true?

All that excess sodium does is to put up the BP a bit. Actual vitamin C is Ascorbic acid. However it is the ascorbate ion which is the active principle. Sodium ascorbate ionizes immediately. Calcium is slower.

Therapeutically all three are the same.

The amount of sodium nitrite preservative in food is very small so it would be very unlikely that you would ever reach the 2 gm lethal dosage.

To reach that lethal level you would probably have to eat a few buckets of sodium nitrite preservative containing foods and you would probably die from over eating.

How can I stop spitting after using sodium fluoride mouthwash?
After using bubble gum flavored sodium fluoride mouth wash, i constantly salivate, and makes me want to spit, so I drink water, which I'm not supposed to...
What can i do to ease up on the saliva and spitting?

The sodium flouride is bought at a store. But my dentist told me to buy it.

Is this floride given to you by a dentist? If it is it may be due to the acidity of the floride which causes a sour taste. You can ask your dentist to see if they have a floride that is PH neutral. Or if they have floride varnish which they can use.

Toothpaste question: Crest versus Tom's of Maine?
I have both Crest and Tom's of Maine toothpastes:

Crest
0.243% Sodium flouride (0.16% w/v fluoride ion).

Tom's of Maine - Cinnamon-Clove flavor
Sodium monofluorophosphate, 0.13 w/v fluoride ion.

Tom's of Maine - Orange-Mango flavor
Sodium fluoride - 0.243%

Which is better? Does the % of Sodium fluoride matter when choosing which one to use?

is the salt in baking soda harmful for low sodium diets?
ok, so i'm purposely leaving out the salt required in baking recipes because i'm trying to follow a low salt diet - only to now find out (thank you sincerely - yahoo answers!!!) baking soda has tons of salt. I'm wondering if the sodium carbonate used in baking soda is as detrimental as regular sodium. If i'm using 1 teaspoon of baking soda - is that the exact same thing as 1 teaspoon of sodium - in regards to dietary considerations? if so ...sh*t sh*t sh*t :-( - but heck, at least now i know.

Reply
Yes it will affect your diet!
1 teaspoon baking soda = approx. 1000 mg sodium.
1 teaspoon salt = approx. 2,300 mg sodium
But it's not the end of the "baking" world. Remember you need to divide the number of servings in your recipe by the amount of teaspoons of baking powder. So unless you eat whatever you baked in one day you wouldn't get the whole 1000mg (if you used 1tsp). But if you're using yeast you're going to need salt for the chemistry. Anyway hope this helped. And check this store out. It has sodium free baking powder which helped me keep baking -- Livinglowsodium.com

Good luck!

Is corn syrup bad??????
Not High Fructose Corn Syrup.. Just corn syrup.
I just found out that my lunch-meat turkey contains corn syrup
along with, WATER, MODIFIED CORN STARCH, CONTAINS 2% OR LESS OF: DEXTROSE, SALT, SODIUM LACTATE, CARRAGEENAN, NATURAL FLAVORS, SODIUM PHOSPHATE, SODIUM DIACETATE, SODIUM NITRITE.

Sodium Phosphates is a food additive. It is used to increase the shelf life and add a texture to the food and add a ‘look’ that is pleasing and appealing to the consumer, and which will entice them to purchase and eat the product.
It can be found in all varieties off foods including (but not exclusive too) soups, readymade food, cheeses, CHICKENS, cakes....
A small number of people can develop a intolerance to Sodium Phosphate. They may experience a stiff neck, foot cramps and dizziness... perhaps a little like a hangover. Seek medical attention in such an event.

It is an abrasive so you don´t want that in your mouth directly, you can use a variety of toothpastes which includes sodium bicarbonate in the formula, otherwise you are tearing down your teeth enamel.
Over the counter whitening products aren´t safe either, my boyfriend used one of this products and his tooth get stained because the product wore down the tooth enamel.
Your sure bet is go to the dentist and have your tooth whitening professionally, remember you first need to remove all the plaque.
A good smile goes a long way, so don´t risk your natural assets with non liable products or procedures.

It contains chlorine dioxide, which is made from the oxidation of Sodium Chlorite. Chlorine dioxide is used primarily for bleaching of wood pulp, but is also used for the bleaching of flour and for the disinfection of municipal drinking water. Chlorine dioxide has never been studied for ANY medical condition including high blood pressure. There is absolutely NO evidence it improves blood pressure. There have been short term studies of Chlorine dioxide for water disinfection. The studies were only for weeks to months. No significant adverse effects were noted, but the long term effects are unknown. The use of chlorine dioxide as a supplement has never been studied and its safety at the doses used are unknown. The developer of MMS has absolutely no training in medicine. I would suggest your dad stop this and get evaluated by a doctor ASAP for his blood pressure and dizziness.

Ways to balance/counter high salt intake?
I just ate a whole Van Holten's Pickle, then realized that the 22% daily value for sodium on the back was for 1/5 of the pickle! I just consumed more than an entire day's worth of sodium! What foods would do well in countering this excessive sodium intake? I normally don't have very salty food, so will this one exception of over-consumption of daily recommended salt intake be ok (as in, not too damaging to my health)? Thank you!

Eat a banana, the potassium from the banana will balance the extra salt in your system.

Potassium is necessary for water balance and is found inside of every cell in your body. The potassium inside the cells balances the sodium outside the cells to maintain pressure and water balance in the body. Otherwise, if either the potassium or the sodium is high or either low or one high and the other one low, a pooling of water or dehydration can occur, although the effects from one pickle are probably not enough to cause pooling or dehydration.

What can I take at the onset of a reaction to Sodium Nitrite and preservatives?
I have food allergies anyway but the ones I have the most trouble with is these preservatives, Sodium Nitrites especially in meat BACON. I believe I am having some type of reaction. I start with a headache then water retention which then goes straight to a full blown migraine that can last for days its like hell out of control. Sometimes I get it from soups and different things when I eat out. So I wonder if there is something I can take specifically for this, I already take an allergy pill Clairton everyday. I wonder also where to go to find out more about other people with this and what the symptoms are with these preservative and Sodium Nitrite

Do you know any toothpaste that doesnt have sodium lauryl sulfate in it?
Sodium lauryl sulfate is an ingredient present in all toothpaste. It seems that is very harmful for our gum and teeth since it is a detergent.. It seems that it is like high fructose corn syrup that is present in so many kind of food and it is the culprit of obseity. Well now it is sodium lauryl sulfate in toothpaste that it seems to be the enemy in the fight against cavities and gum recession.

Why is the risk of pulmonary edema increased with the use of sodium bicarbonate and sodium polystyreme sulfonate (Kayexalate)?
Clare

Simple. Both contain sodium. In the body, water tends to 'follow' sodium. So if you increase your sodium intake, then water will be retained.

If you're already overloaded with fluid, it could result in pulmonary edema.

A VERY simplified explanation.

Sodium citrate usually refers to trisodium citrate, though it can refer to any of the sodium salts of citric acid:
In 1914, the Belgian doctor Albert Hustin and the Argentine physician and researcher Luis Agote successfully used sodium citrate as an anticoagulant in blood transfusions. It continues to be used today in blood collection tubes and for the preservation of blood in blood banks. The citrate ion chelates calcium ions in the blood, disrupting the blood clotting mechanism.

Sodium benzoate intolerant?
For the longest time, my toddler was having unexplainable rashes. The nurse practitioner at his pediatrician's suggested additives may be the culprit, specifically sodium nitrite and nitrate. Sure enough, when we started paying attention to these ingredients, we found a connection to his rashes.

Soon after, I found online a list of preservatives people suspect to cause adverse symptoms. One ingredient listed, sodium benzoate, was in a certain medication my son had an allergic reaction to. Since then, I have been checking the labels on everything I buy, and there really seems to be a connection. But his pediatrician says she doesn't think he's allergic to it since it's in so many foods. Except since I've been refraining from giving him anything with SB in it, he's been rash free. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Also, I read that "allergies" to preservatives aren't true allergies, but intolerances (like lactose int.). What kind of specialist would we see for this?
He also seems to have reactions to the red dye cochineal/carmine, and like I mentioned, sodium nitrates and nitrites, which are in processed meats. None of these ingredients have shown up together on labels. All I know is if he accidentally eats anything with these or sodium benzoate on the label, he breaks out in a rash.

I think you are right that most preservatives/additives aren't allergies but intolerances. I also agree that you've identified what is causing his rash. I personally know that presevatives/additives can cause reactions because I can't drink some chocolate milk because certain brands cause me to break out in hives. I am not allergic to chocolate or milk but when the add all the other "stuff" it produces a nasty reaction.
If you want more guidance I would recommend a nutritionist or a naturopathic/alternative medicine doctor. I think you've done the hard part though which is discovering the culprit for the rash. Congratulations on the fine detective work!

Doctors and pharmacists both have access to a database of drug and supplement interactions and they can tell you quickly if you can safely take them together or not.... anyone here will just have a best guess from searching on the internet (which isn't always accurate, as we all know) ;-) Good luck!
