Could i be allergic to neosporin I am putting on a cat scratch?
My cat scratched me pretty bad about a week ago, I cleaned it immediately and have been cleaning it and using peroxide/neosporin since. I noticed red itchy bumps around the scratch that seem to be worse when i use the neosporin? I've never had a problem using it in the past. Would betadine work better to help this heal? Are neosporin allergies common? Thanks!
Thanks guys. I had my dr. look at it just in case. Turns out I was having an allergic reaction to the cat scratch. Got some meds and it is looking a little better each day.

Its possible that you can have an allergy to neosporin. Cats scratches and bites are bad to start with. There is something in the nails of their claws that our skins just doesn't agree with. Betadine would not be any better, in fact it actually inhibits healing. Soap and water has always worked. Since its been a week, keeping the wound moist with a topical antibiotic can also inhibit healing. Keep it dry and covered lightly. Hope this helps

Can staph infections cause an allergy to neosporin or polysporin?
My husband and I have both recently had staph infections and (this time) both been to the dermatologist for them. My dermatologist told me to use polysporin for mine, and then surrounding areas started getting itchy. When I went back, he told me I was allergic to polysporin and therefore also allergic to neosporin. My husband used polysporin and neosporin on his at different times, and the dermatologist told him he was now allergic to neosporin because of what happened. Both of us have used neosporin all of our lives. Why are we both suddenly allergic to it? Could the staph that is probably living in us, and may have been for 2 years, (till we can get rid of it permanently) have caused us to become allergic to polysporin/neosporin? Also, is there any chance that we're not permanently allergic to polysporin/neosporin?

Is it bad to get neosporin in your eyes?
So my eye was a bit swollen this morning. It was a bit painful I think I had scratched in yesterday when I got soap in my eye. I put neosporin on my eyelid and a bit got into my eye. It's a bit uncomfortable but not painful. Is it okay to get neosporin in your eye?

Not at all, neosporin is extracted from a plant and with no added chemicals. I would recommend eye drops for your aggrivated eye though. This is because it will not aggitate you like the neosporin does

How long does it take for a burn to heal if you used Neosporin?
I burned myself on the forehead with a curling iron & applied Neosporin. Whenever the skin got wet the burn peeled. Now I keep it covered with a bandaid & apply Neosporin consistently each day. Will my scar be permanent?

Stop applying the neosporin. Neosporin isnt good for burns, because its petroleum based. If your worried about scars just buy some vitamin E capsules, break them open, and apply the liquid to the scar.

Can I use neosporin with a sulfa allergy?
I recently found out that I have an allergy to sulfa drugs after using Bactrim for an injury which had gotten infected.

I was wondering if it was okay to use neosporin on wounds, since it contains neomycin sulfate. Is neosporin considered a sulfa product as well, or is neomycin sulfate in a completely different category? I've never had an allergy to neosporin in the past, but I thought I should ask someone who knows a thing or two about pharmacology. Thanks to anyone with answers.

There should be a 1-800 number on the tube or box that you can call and they should be able to tell you. or you can ask your local pharmacist

What is the difference between neosporin and polysporin?
And what are they used for, what do they do?
I know my sister used to get nosebleeds a lot and she would put neosporin in her nose... I was never sure why though.

Polysporin has two active antibiotic ingredients - where Neosporin has three. Both are great for promoting healing for minor cuts, punctures, or abrasions. Some people tend to be more prone to allergic reaction from Neosporin, because it is so strong, and they have no problem with Polysporin.

When it is used in the nasal passages, it is usually applied to help with the excessive drying that can occur in people who use antihistamines for allergies. The function of antihistamines is to dry out the sinuses to assist in reducing their response to allergens. Sometimes, while helping your allergies, but can cause the passages to dry and crack, which is where the nose bleeds come from.

Is it dangerous to apply Neosporin to the face every night?
I apply Neosporin to my face every night. I have acne kinda, and when I was like 17, I remember my dermatologist telling me to put neosporin on this bump I had on my nose. Anyway, now I put it on all my bumps, every night, and it seems to work. I just want to know if its ok to do this every night?

I would usually only apply that stuff to my face if I had a sun burn, cut, or bruise, since it makes the skin heal up quicker, etc.

It may be a cause of acne? Since it is a really oily substance it could block the pores in your skin, thus creating acne/pimples and such.

Other then that, I'm not sure, someone should really do a test on that.

How can I remove neosporin ointment from my hair?
I have had this problem with whiteheads on my scalp because of a yeast problem, I know sounds nasty but quite common. I used neosporin ointment and now it won't come out of my head. It's made my hair greasy. I was wondering if a deep cleansing shampoo would do the trick?

a deep cleansing shampoo could work very well, but what I use when I have something stuck in my hair (p.s. three year olds and peanut butter = not a good mix at nap time) is mashed avacado and dray oats (think quaker oatmeal). I mix the mashed avacado with the oats nd put it in my hair for about five minutes... then rinse it out. the oats pull out damaging oils and gunk and the avacados replenish nutrients and vitamins.

I doubt it. Leave it alone, don't pop it or put make up on it. You want to breath. Maybe some gentle face wash at the most

Can skin disinfectants like Neosporin cancel out the effects of Birth Control Pills?
So, recently, my partner and I had a pregnancy scare, and she's now on the birth control pill for protection. We heard from a friend a while back (who is a very reliable source) that skin disinfectants such as neosporin can cancel the pill. I've searched for a while, but I can only find things on antibiotics, nothing on skin disinfectants. I think he may have gotten his words mixed or we misunderstood, or he might just be plain wrong, but can anyone help so we know? Thanks.

Topical (skin) antibiotics (such as Neosporin) are not well-absorbed into the bloodstream like oral antibiotics and therefore should not affect oral contraceptives. Skin disinfectants (such as Bactine and and rubbing alcohol) have absolutely no affect on oral contraceptives.

It may be helpful to understand how oral antibiotics affect oral birth control pills:

1. Antibiotics cause enzymes in the liver to increase the breakdown of estrogen in birth control pills, making the estrogen less available for absorption and use.

2. The liver breaks down birth control pills and secretes them into the intestines along with bile. Intestinal bacteria then make sure the hormones are absorbed and used by the body. Antibiotics can kill enough "normal" intestinal bacteria that these hormones will not be absorbed.

In either of the above scenarios, ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary) can result, which can then lead to pregnancy if the egg is fertilized.

Not much real research has been done on antibiotics and oral birth control; who would want to participate in such a study? Most instances of oral contraceptive failure due to antibiotics has been reported by patients.

Topical antibiotics are not processed by the liver (at least in quantities other than extremely miniscule ones), so they should not affect oral contraceptives.

Want more information? Search for "topical antibiotics oral contraceptives" on the Internet.

It is a strong, broad spectrum topical antibiotic ointment. It will most likely clear up your external infection on the earlobe, although you will likely have to use your earring post to shove a bit through the piercing hole to help clear up anything inside that tube. If you have had the ointment for a long time, it may not be as effective as when it was "fresh" as a few medicines lose potency over time. But it will most likely "do the trick". I would take out my earring. Wipe it off with an alcohol prep pad (found in any drug store in boxes of 100 for about $2. Using the earring post as a syringe, work a little of the alcohol from the pad into the hole. Wipe off both the front and back of your earlobe with a clean prep pad. Squeeze a little of the ointment onto the earring post, and work it in and out of the piercing. Then remove the earring and leave it out for a day or so while keeping ointment on the exterior of both the front and back of the earlobe. In a couple of days it should be feeling fine. I have very sensitive ears and typically wear only gold or silver earrings, mostly silver. Silver is used in certain hospital procedures because it has a known anti-bacterial property.

Can I use LamISIL on my scalp?
LamISIL ( Terbinafine hydrochloride cream 1%)- anti fungal cream. I've been doing research and all over the hair blogs people have sworn to hair growth by applying miconazole nitrate mostly found in anti fungal creams such as ones for vaginal infections and products such as Neosporin for athletes foot. The Lamisil cream that I have was prescribed by my doctor months ago regarding some discolouration surfacing on my skin which he believed was some form of fungus. The tube does not list the ingredients that's why I am here seeking some answers from hopefully some pharmacists, kind experienced people and well educated people of this field- I need to know if it's safe to apply this product to my scalp, whether you agree with this decision or not. Thanks in advance
Neosporin AF- is indeed for athlete's foot as the product is specifically for athelete's foot- In the products title.

Secondly, it probably hasn't been reported as those who has jock's itch do not use for long terms as many have used it for growth exceeding a month.

first of all , Neosporin is not for athletes foot. neosporin is an antibiotic.

And you can get miconazole over the counter in cream form for athletes foot and yeast infection. Its the same stuff. It also works for ringworm, jock itch and yeast infection on baby bottoms.
Go to a drug store and look for it in the athletes foot section.
The reason your Lamisil tube didn't have any ingredients on the tube is because it is terbinafine hydrochloride cream 1%.....like you said. It has had some bad press lately as in causing liver damage. I would not use it on your head.
On the other hand, the miconazole is safe for baby butts, your family jewels and womans vaginal area, it should be safe for your head. If it grows hair when applied, why hasn't excess hair been reported by guys using it for jock itch?

Help, Duricef or Augmentin for a spider bite?

this is personal advice, not medical advice

are you sure it's a spider bite? if it has remained as long as you say, it is certainly time to get it checked out, if you can.

a very few types of spiders have highly toxic venom, although you probably would have felt other effects by now.

but anyone can have an allergic reaction. were it me, and if i had insurance, i would see a doctor. that is a significantly abnormal time, especially since it seems to be getting bigger

last year i got bitten on the foot by most likely a wolf spider. i had two blisters for quite awhile, and minor scars for almost a year. so one never really knows
