Is Penicillin V Potassium good to treat urinary tract infections?
Yesterday I had my wisdom teeth removed and was prescribed a pain killer, penicillin V Potassium, and another pills. But the night before the surgery I developed a urinary tract infection. I had one just 2 months ago and took amoxicillin but took half the bottle because the pills were too big. Will the penicillin I am taking for my tooth get rid of my uti? The uti pain is horribly bad, worse than my first one. Thank you for your answers!! :)

Yes, its a gram positive & Negative Antibiotic. UTI's are Gram Positive. As long as you take it LONG enough it should also help that too. You may notice elevated body temps.. a little fever..but just watch yourself. Azo helps too.. it coats the UT so the bacteria cant hold onto it...kinda like putting super slick stuff on a slide.. It also makes your Pee Orange but thats ok. You can also get the Azo that has cranberry extract which helps your UT heal. The Bacteria cause alot of inflamation down there. Take some Anti-inflamitories.. Aleve, Ibuprofen and that will help but its not for the pain.. You said you had a pain killer too.. probably 10/325 Hydro codone and or Perco-Cet...those will help with the pain. It would be better if you had Amoxcillin, its more specific along with Pen G. But.. since this is all you have.. it may work. If its not better in 2 days.. GO TO THE DOCTOR.

Edit to Add - TAKE ALL YOUR MEDS, NOT HALF! Otherwise it WILL come back. Even if you feel FINE!

Hope you feel better

penicillin every day?. you'll wipe out your good (natural) flora of your digestive system leading to numerous stomach and intestinal problems. And, when you do get infected with something, penicillin and P-based AB wont be much effective.

How long does it take for penicillin to get out of your system?
I am in the midst of an allergic reaction to penicillin, and I would like to know when this will go away. I took 1,000 milligrams a day for four days, and noticed the allergic reaction yesterday. I have not taken any penicillin since Thursday night, but I still have the hives and itching. I've been taking Benadryl like crazy. When will the penicillin get out of my system and the reaction pass?

Penicillin has a pretty short half life (the time it takes for the amount in your body to be reduced by half) of about 1 hour. After 5 half-lives, ~95 percent of the drug should be eliminated by your kidneys. Some forms of penicillin such as amoxicillin may remain slightly longer in the body until eliminated.

Basically after a day if not re-dosed it should be out of your system. However the allergic reaction may last longer due to the histamine which still remains in the skin released by your white blood cells which view penicillin as a foreign substance. That's why the hives and itching can continue even though you've stopped the penicillin.

Keep taking the Benadryl™ and if you are still bothered by Monday your doctor could prescribe an oral steroid. Topical hydrocortisone cream can be used on more severely affected areas to help relieve some of the itching.

How long does it take for Penicillin V to work?
Okay, so I've had a very low grade fever (from 99.5-100.3) on and off for going on 3 weeks now. Since I don't have medical insurance, I wasn't able to go to a doctor as I'm quite broke. My symptoms finally got bad enough for me to find a doctor, and what went from an upper respiratory infection has now become tonsillitis.

The doctor has perscribed me 500mg of penicillin to be taken 4 times a day. While my fever still comes and goes, I'm on my third day of taking the penicillin, and I still don't feel any better. How long does it take the penicillin to take effect? Could the infection maybe be viral, which is why the penicillin doesnt seem to be taking effect yet?

Your infection might be bacterial but resistant to penicillin or it might just be taking some time to get better. It might be viral...many infections are. Be sure to take the penicillin on an empty stomach or it wont be well absorbed.

Potassium citrate and potassium chloride?
If someone has been on Potassium citrate (urocit-k) for 9 years (for Cystinuria/Kidney stones), why would a doctor have them to start taking both the potassium citrate and the potassium chloride, together? Especially if that person has developed High blood pressure?

Why would a strain of Staphylococcus aureus become resistant to penicillin?
Assume that you are a microbiologist who has been doing research on a penicillin-sensitive strain of Staphylococcus aureus for many months. One day you discover that the organism is now resistant to penicillin. You know that it has not come in contact with any other species of bacteria, nor has it come in contact with the DNA from any other species of bacteria. What are two possible explanations for its sudden change from penicillin susceptibility to penicillin resistance?

  Genetic mutation.
All it takes is one little bacterium with a gentic mutation that makes it immune to your penecillin. If it manages to survive and replicate, it will create a whole bunch of little baby mutuants, that will live long and prosper without fear of your deadly penecillin.

A second way... hmm... not sure.

azithromycin or penicillin for tooth infection?
Back in june I had an infected wisdom tooth, which i was given penicillin for until my dental insurance kicks in at the end of october. well, last week i was at the doctors office for an ear infection and was giving azithromycin for it. Yesterday my tooth infection returned (I know my ear isnt related to my tooth..different sides and i saw the dr), so my dentist prescribed the penicillin again and some dolobid for the pain. So my 2 questions are:

Can i take the penicillin while on the azithromycin, or should i wait until i finish that up on saturday and maybe start the penicillin monday or tuesday?

And also, how is dolobid? I never took it before and I am worried it's going to keep me up all night or make me sick, although most things make me sleepy.

Thanks to anyone who can help!

These are not questions you should be asking here. Call your dentist and tell him you are on arithromycin and why and ask him what to do next. He may want to coordinate something with your other doctor. This is definitely the time to ask a professional, and his advice and guidance should be free when you call. By the way, you should have told the dentist office when you went in tthat you were already on another med.
Go make that phone call!
Good luck! :)

Could I do something about the ER doctor?
I took my 5 year old son to emergency room yesterday morning. He was running a fever and throwing up. He has asthma and has an allergy of trimox which is a form of penicillin, his dad is allergic to penicillin and so is his older sister. I told them this and they put the orange allergy band on him with PCN which of course lets nurses and doctors know he is allergic to penicillin. Well, he has Strep throat and the er doctor prescribed him penicillin. The pharmacy where I get prescriptions filled had a red flag when they started to fill his prescription. Needless to say, they did not fill it and I called his doctor to have them phone him in another prescription for an antibiotic other than penicillin. Do you think I could do anything about this? If the pharmacy would not have caught this, My son could have had severe reactions to this medicine.

This is the problem with emergency room doctors, they are over worked and get little sleep. And yet this is the way America trains her doctors. No forget about it, you did the right thing, and so did the pharmacy. Good that they had a flag on his records. I read an article in my doctors office yesterday that when you have a patient in the hospital or a relative, you should always have someone with that patient, and they should always ask what the medications are he or she is receiving. So many times in hospitals now, patients are given the wrong medications. Google Denis Quaid + too much blood thinner.
He appeared before Congress, to try and prevent what happened to his new born twins from happening to any other patients. They almost died from an overdose of blood thinner. And he was concerned when he found out this happens every day in hospitals in america.
He will be on the Oprah show today, you should watch it, gives all sorts of information about how doctors and hospitals make mistakes and how we as patients can insure that we and our relatives get good care.

Penicillin?
If Im taking 4 tablets a day of penicillin for a UTI, how soon should this horrible burning sensation go away? I just started my penicillin tonight (2 tablets).

Is this buring sensation normal? How about a desire to urinate but only having 5ml come out? What about having less control of my bladder (urine just flying out)?

In a couple of days the burning and frequency should have abated. You will probably start to feel some relief by tomorrow.
Penicillin is a broad spectrum antibiotic which works quickly. In the meantime, try to avoid any high acid intake (Citrus, tomato, pepper and even aspirin).

I hope you feel better soon. Don't forget to finish your prescription completely.

Why are Potassium tablets so low in the DV%?
I have looked at all the other supplements at GNC, like Vitamin C and Magnesium for example, and they have well over 100% of the DV. However, Potassium is only like 3 or 4% of the daily value, why is this? It seems pointless to buy if that is all the Potassium you are getting.

I don't know, it does seem pointless but I am thinking that because Potassium is so easily obtained in the human diet they think that they don't have to put very much in the tablets. Or because they think people don't care to read the label and just pick up any random supplement they see.

I have to take Potassium and Magnesium bc I'm on diuretics - Does it matter between Calcate, Citrate, Carbo-
-nate etc. Also, does using Potassium Chloride (NoSalt) count towards Potassium supplementation?

Citrate and carbonate are good forms to take. NoSalt would count, too.
Note that the different forms of the minerals have different molecular weights, so make sure you get the right amount of the mineral. Check the label to see how much potassium or magnesium is in a tablet of the supplement.

What is the difference between potassium chloride an potassium bicarbonate?
In terms of healthy balance of bodily electrolytes, I'm not sure what difference there is between the two. Is it as simple as potassium chloride is the combination of the electrolytes potassium + chloride while potassium bicarbonate is the combination of the electrolytes potassium + bicarcarbonate? I'm not sure if it breaks down that simply.
Anne

Yes, it actually is that simple. Potassium bonds very well to both chloride and bicarbonate. Potassium has a +1 charge, while both chloride and bicarbonate have a -1 charge.

Check out this site for a detailed description of these three electrolytes and their effect on the body:

Why is there never a supplement that can provide a 100% DV of potassium?

Yes, too much K is a bad thing. It can cause kidney failure. I was put on a supplement by a doc and i didn't actually need it and i OD'd my kidney's went into whats called Azotemia which is a condition where your kidneys are messing up but aren't in actual renal failure. I was so sick for like a week til my body got it all out of my system. Stick to eating K rich foods like bananas and dark green leafy veggies. Don't mess with K supplements they will mess up your body.

can you build up a tolerance for penicillin?
Specifically, Penlac?( A penicillin laquer for the nails)

You dont build the tolerance, you bacteria does. And anyones bacteria can build up a tolerance for any antibiotic.
This is why when prescribed antibiotics, the person must finish all of them even if symptoms have disappeared. This is also why they should only take them if they need them. Some doctors prescribe them for viral infections just to make the patient happy---not good. And this is also why doctors shouldn't keep prescribing the same antibiotic to you.

Why won't my tonsillitis go away? It's been over a month and a week and i still have it..help!?
Ive had tonsillitus about 7 or 8 times before but have never gone to the doctors for antibiotics because it usually gets better after a week. On Feb 20th i got it again and deided to go to my GP. The doctor gave me 250 mg of penicillin 4 times a day for 7 days and took a throat swab. The penicillin seemed to work and by the end of the 7 days i felt OK but then a couple of dayslater it came back so i went back to the GP who then gave me a futher 4 days of penicillin and said the swab came back with strep throat which was sensitive to penicillin. Then after these four days i felt ok again but got ill a couple of days later and went back to the GP who then gave me 250mg of penicillin to be taken 8 times a day for 7 days. The same thing happened..it made me better then a few days after i finnished the course i got ill again. I went back to my Gp and am now on erythromycin stearate but nothing seems to be happening. Why wont it go away?If i hadnt gone to the GP would it be better by now?

It wouldn't be better if you hadn't gone to the GP.
You may have a weakened immune system which is why you haven't stayed better.

I agree that you ought to go to an ENT MD. However, if the ENT tell you to get tonsils out...go for 2nd opinion.

To boost immune system immediately:

Vit. C 2000mg. every 2 hours
Suck on Zinc lozenges.
Suck on cough drops with eucalyptus.
Zinc 50 mg.
Echineacea
Goldenseal root (only 5 days in a row)
Astragalus

Hope you feel better soon.

Why was I prescribed Septra for strep throat?
As I understand it, Septra is primarily used for urinary tract infections and (rarely) for strep throat when the patient has a penicillin allergy. I specifically told my doctor today that I am not allergic to penicillin and that I was prescribed penicillin the last time I had strep throat (~ 1 year ago).

Is there something I'm missing?

What are the effects of spironolactone on acne? Also,if I get 2 much potassium from this drug, what can happen?
I am wondering about the drug Spironolactone and it's effects on people taking it for acne.   I think penicillin is mostly used for bacterial infections. However I think your doggie may need an eye ointment, something that can be drooped into the eye. He may have something in his eye than you cannot see, that has irritated him, and now there is a discharge. If you can't get to the vet, maybe go to your local feed store and see what they suggest. Feed stores usually have med's for dogs.

STREP THROAT. i heard you shouldnt eat when taking penicillin... ?
one of the questions here asked how long before you can eat non astronaut food basically. now either they meant because of the strep throat discomfort or because penicillin can only work on an empty stomach?

sorry for sounding stupid but this is my first time having strep throat.

i think its gotten a little better. this is day 3 of taking penicillin (2 pills, 3 times a day, 3 days, then 2 pills a day, twice for 7 days)

it still hurts alot to swallow when am i gonna see results? (ibuprofen not helping much)

When you are sick is when you need the most nutritious food, so you definitely eat when taking penicillin. I know you probably don't have much appetite, and it probably still hurts to swallow, but you need to try all you can to eat real, nutritious food. Warm soup is good and so it hot tea; both are soothing. But you need real, solid food as well. The penicillin treats the infection, so by eliminating the infection, you will eventually begin to feel better, but in the meantime, you also need symptom relief in order to feel better now. Someone mentioned Tylenol or ibuprofen. Use either/or, but not both. Warm fluids are soothing, as we said, rest if helpful and drink a lot of water. OJ is good too. I've known people who put a sprinkle of cinnamon on top of OJ and warm it up in the microwave, just because warm fluids are soothing....I don't know if it's good, but you might want to try it--you might like it..Hope you feel better soon.

I'm having effects from low potassium again?
This morning my feet were stuck in a cramp for about an hour. Last time I had low potassium that kept my hands in cramps for hours at a time, I was pregnant and had to be hospitalized. I was in premature labor to add to the mix and they had me on magnesium sulfate to stop it. My level was 2.4 when I got there. I took the huge pills with orange juice 3x a day and within 3 days they got up to 3.5. It was decided that it must have been me missing the potassium in my diet even though I craved bananas, OJ, tangerines and I still do really always had a thing for oranges. So I've been extra careful to keep those things in my diet now I had that cramp which is coming back in my right foot I wonder is this a deficiecy or what? I am nursing, which takes a lot of calories but I eat right probably more nutritious foods because I'm nursing I don't think I should be lacking potassium when I drink OJ and eat bananas all the time. Then I'm reading up on low potassium on the internet and come across magnesium and potassium balance *I was on magnesium sulfate last time my potassium level was critical and I'm wondering if the reason my levels went up so well in the hospital is because of the magnesium sulfate. Does that make sense? At least it seems to make sense to me and I have to go in today my nurse said because last time it was so low and I'm going to ask the doctor about it.

Lack of potassium in the diet is an uncommon cause of hypokalemia (low potassium). Conditions that cause hypokalemia are: kidney disorders that affects kidney function – the kidneys may excrete too much potassium, magnesium deficiency, high aldosterone levels can cause low potassium levels, certain drugs, severe vomiting, diarrhea, sweating during intense exercise, malaborption problems. Diseases that cause hypokalemia are Liddle’s syndrome, Cushing’s syndrome, Fanconi’s syndrome, and Bartter’s syndrome.

Calcium cannot absorb without vitamin D and vice versa. Calcium cannot be assimulated in the body without magnesium. If you have low magnesium you need to take calcium at a 2:1 ratio eg 1000mg of calcium to 500mg of magnesium and vitamin D 5000IU a day is recommended. The most accurate and reliable blood test available for magnesium and calcium is an "ionized" test.

Spironolactone often increases serum potassium levels and can cause hyperkalemia, a very serious condition. Therefore, it is recommended that people using this drug avoid potassium supplements and salt substitutes containing potassium. Doctors usually recommend periodic screening of serum potassium levels and some patients may be advised to limit dietary consumption of potassium.

Do not use spironolactone if you have kidney disease, urination problems, or high levels of potassium in your blood. Do not use salt substitutes or low-sodium milk products that contain potassium. These products could cause your potassium levels to get too high while you are taking spironolactone.

If you are taking potassium supplements or other potassium-sparing diuretics such as Aldactazide, amiloride (Midamor, Moduretic), or triamterene (Dyrenium, Dyazide, Maxzide).

Check with your doctor regarding your sleepy symptom if this continues. Are you taking this for high blood pressure? Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is caused by low potassium. So, your doctor needs to evaluate your potassium levels as this could be causing your fatigue.

Hope this helps.

I've been on bed rest for 4 days now. I am unable to drink any liquids, eat, or swallow anything. For the first days I had high fever and was sweating a lot. I feel better now, except that nothing passes through my throat. I was given a vaccine while at the doctor's office and was prescribed Penicillin V Potassium and also Codeine syrup. I'm following my doctor's instructions but I feel like I'm not going anywhere! How long will I be like this, I miss drinking a cold glass of water.

How many times a day should I take penicillin?
I had two wisdom teeth removed and my dentist wants me to take a pill of penicillin vk 4 times a day for 7 days. The bottle however says take one pill every 6 hours. Do I take 3 pills each day? Help!

Ask the druggist. Usually you divide the day up without making yourself wake up in the middle of the night to take a pill. Start the penicillin (never skip one) and call the dentist and/or the druggist to get this clarified. Maybe you have a stronger pill than the dentist thought you would be getting and three a day are enough. Don't guess because you need enough penicillin to be sure you don't get an infection and not so much you have problems.

Should I go to the Hospital?
I was taking Penicillin for Strep Throat - 7 days ago, I have 10 days of Penicillin (2 Tabs, 3 x a day) I'm saying this because I dont know if taking the Penicillin is related to my symptoms or not.

5 days ago I started getting "hot" and feeling like I was hot. 3 days ago, I had chills, pretty bad and then got really hot all in the same night. I continue to feel like it's las Vegas outside and I live in snowy Alberta.

I also have some soreness/stiffness in my lower back. I am sneezing and I feel extremely irritable.

Do I need to go to the hospital? The Doctors isn't open until Tuesday, and Walk in Clinics are open tomorrow but I honestly dont feel I can wait.

Is Penicillin VK safe to take while pregnant?
I had tooth extraction the other day and the dentist who I don't usually see first told me he wouldn't give me antibiotics due to how early in the pregnancy I am (only 7 weeks) and that's why he removed the tooth. He struggled getting it out and seemed a bit inexperienced. But now it's swollen up and leaking stuff that tastes really bad and he's given me a prescription for penicillin VK - I dunno whether to trust him now. Anyone got any advice who knows about this please?

please help..10 points best answer! Missed antibiotics (erythromycin stearate 250mg) for tonsillitis?
Hey...wondering of anyone could help me out!
I've had tonsilitus for about a month and a half now and after being on penicillin for ages im now taking erythromycin stearate to try and get rid of it. I'm meant to take 4 tablets a day but missed all todays ones(im on day 5 of 7) and am wondering wether to take more tomorrow or just leave them out? Ive had tonsilitus many times but this time it isn't going away very easily so i'm concerned this will stop the antibiotics working properly and it will get worse again..which would be horrible!
Yeah the doctor did a throat swab about 3/4 weeks ago which said it was sensitive to penicillin and was strep throat...penicillin didnt work properly though and the swab was too old to see what else it was sensitive to when i went back...maybe getting another one next week though but i'd rather it just got better with these antibiotics!

I would go ahead and take the antibiotics now, you don't want to double up on them tomorrow as that can be dangerous to your kidneys and because drugs don't work well if you aren't taking them as prescribed.

Tonsils can be such pain because they are so envagenated, when they get infected, it can be very difficult to get them uninfected. Penicillin is usually good for strep infections, which is mostly the kind of bacteria in your throat/mouth. Did he bother to do an upper respiratory culture on you? Usually all we look for is group a strep, but chances are if your Doctor requests to look for somehing else they would.

Anyways, good luck getting your tonsils clear. It took me 5 weeks to get rid of Strep throat because my tonsels just didnt want to clear up.

It worked good keeping my BP down and I never had to worry about adding potassium to my diet.

Potassium chloride occurs as either white, granular powder or as colorless, elongated, prismatic or cubical crystals. It is odorless and has a saline taste. One gram of potassium chloride contains 13.4 mEq of potassium. Potassium chloride may also be known as KCl.

Potassium gluconate occurs as white to yellowish white, crystalline powder or granules. It is odorless and has a slightly bitter taste and is freely soluble in water. One gram of potassium gluconate contains 4.3 mEq of potassium.

can I take Levaquin 750 mg if I am allergic to penicillin?

The answer to your question is yes.

Here's why:
Penicillins: are the first antibiotics discovered by mankind. There's different subtypes of penicillin. What they all have in common is a chemical ring structure called the beta-lactam. When bacteria make cell walls, penicillins interfere with process making the bacteria more susceptible to die.

Penicillin allergies are not uncommon. About 10% of patients taking penicillin will have an allergy to it. <1% will have really bad allergic reactions. About 10% will have what is known as cross-reactions: meaning that they will have allergies to the cousins of penicillins: the carbepenams and cephalosporins.

Levaquin belongs to a family of antibiotics known as the Quinolones. These are the antibiotics which interfere with the bacterial DNA gyrase a molecule used in DNA replications.

Levaquin also as side effects. Most commonly, tummy upset and rash. I will not list out every allergy because it is not in the scope of your question, (I can't recall every single allergy), and I don't want to worry you to the point where you don't take it.

Please remember that EVERYTHING has a side effect from acetoaminophen (paracetamol/tylenol) to soap.

As with all medications you are taking, it is best to know why you are taking them, how you should take them, what they do, and what are the side effects.

Summary and suggestions:
1. yes you can take levaquin if you have PCN allergy
2. Whenever the doctor prescribes you a medication, always ask him/her: why am I taking it? how much do I take? How do I take it? When will I start feeling relief? What do I have to watch out for? And what should I do if I think the medication is not working or doing something bad to me?
3. When you pick up the med from the pharmacist also ask the last set of questions...this will reinforce your knowledge.
4. If you live in the United Kingdom, pharmacies give out great information packets which are fun to read and also really informative.

Can you substitute kelp for potassium iodide?

mgs4Real

but you would need 578 tablets to get 130mg iodine

One of the greatest dangers following a nuclear accident comes from exposure to gases containing radioactive isotopes of iodine. These highly carcinogenic isotopes are readily taken up by the thyroid gland, resulting in the development of thyroid cancer. Exposure to radioactive iodine calls for immediate treatment with another form of iodine, potassium iodide, to saturate the thyroid and block the absorption of radioactive iodine. .

Potassium Iodide (KI)
Potassium iodide tablets are commonly stockpiled near nuclear power plants to allow for rapid distribution in case of a radioactive accident. In the absence of tablets, potassium iodide may also be administered as a "saturated solution of potassium iodide" (SSKI) which in the U.S.P. generic formulation contains 1000 mg of KI per ml of solution. Two drops of U.S.P. SSKI solution is equivalent to one 130 mg KI tablet (100 mg iodide).

Recommended Doses
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the following doses of potassium iodide should be taken as a single dose within three hours of exposure, or up to 10 hours after exposure, although this is less effective.

• Adults : 130 mg

• Adolescents: 12-18: WHO -- adult dose; CDC -- children's dose; if adult size (150 pounds or over) they should take the full adult dose, regardless of their age.
• Children age 3-12 years: 65 mg

• Infants : 1 mo. to 3 years, 32. 25 mg (ie half tablet)
• Newborns to 1 mo., 1/4 capsule.

Precautions
While potassium iodate can be taken by a majority of people without any problems, it should only be used in case of a nuclear emergency. Doses in excess of the single (one time only) daily dose listed above should be taken only upon recommendation by a physician or public health authority. Patients should notify their doctor if taking quinidine, captopril, or enalopril, or if they are sensitive to iodine, or suffer from dermatitis herpetiformis, thyrotoxicosis or kidney problems before taking potassium iodate (or any thyroid blocker).

Prophylaxis
It is best to take iodide prophylactically, prior to exposure. Every family should have a good supply in their homes. At this time we may recommend taking 10-40mg per day. A dose of 30-50mg is the range of dietary intake in Japan and relatively safe to take long term but under practitioner monitoring. Build up gradually: 10mg-20mg-30mg-40mg.

Then, in case there is an official announcement of significantly increased radiation, adults should go to the dose mentioned above: 130mg/day and children to lower doses per body weight, generally 65 mg, age 3-12 years. You can use a loading dose of two drops daily of Lugol's Iodine, a commonly available pharmaceutical form of potassium iodide, or SSKI, and increase to 130 mg if needed. See the U.S. Centers for Disease Control recommendations.

Other supplements that may be protective are: vitamin D and vitamin K as they support appropriate apoptosis, which is programmed death of cells that accumulate various DNA errors (due to radiation and other causes), and vitamin D also supports DNA repair.

Avoid exposure to rain that may be laden with radiation if we are exposed. You'll be informed by authorities if that is the case.

Other Radiation Dangers
Besides I-131, there are other toxic radio-isotopes, including cerium 137 and plutonium. To protect yourself from cesium poisoning, consume plenty of high potassium foods, as potassium competitively inhibits cesium uptake. Foods high in potassium include avocados, sea vegetables, & leafy green vegetables, and are more effective than taking a potassium supplement.

To protect yourself from plutonium poisoning, eat lots of dulse & consume iron from plant sources, namely sea algaes such as spirulina and chlorella, which provide more iron than red meat. Miso soup has also been shown to have a protective effect. The mineral, zeolite, is being investigated for taking most radioactive materials out of the body.

Additionally, foods and supplements high in antioxidants, will also help the body cope with these higher toxic levels as radioactive materials cause antioxidant depletion and ill health.

Summary
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has admitted it is 'quite possible' that fallout from the Japanese reactors could reach America, though levels expected to be so low as to be almost undetectable. Given the unprecedented circumstances of the current crisis, though, it would be prudent to keep some potassium iodide on hand as a precautionary measure.

How much potassium is to much if you are taking triamterene?
my father is in the hospital and is throwing up and high blood pressure and we think it is because he is eating to much potassium while being on the triamterene medication
Julie

Potassium requirements vary. In most people, the kidneys are able to keep potassium levels in balance and will excrete any excess potassium to keep levels balanced. The exception to this is if someone has decreased kidney function or is on a medication that affects potassium. Triamterene is a Potassium sparing diuretic, which basically means it increases the reabsorpiton of potassium back into the body and therefore decreases the excretion of potassium into the urine. Potassium levels can increase in blood and should be monitored by simple blood tests at regular intervals. Triamterene is frequently used with other diuretics that decrease Potassium levels, like Hydrochlorothiazide, which each balance each other out. Triamterene does not cause high potassium in every patient who takes it.

Was your father taking Potassium supplements or was he just eating foods with high potassium? If he was given supplements, this suggests that his doctor noted that he had low potassium on blood tests and is giving extra potassium to get it in the normal range. There are usually few or no symptoms of high potassium levels in the body, but it can be tested for with a simple blood test. Symptoms include muscle weakness and increased urination. Nausea and vomiting are not typical symptoms of elevated potassium. High potassium levels are potentially life threatening, because it leads to deadly heart rhythms. I am sure they have checked his potassium levels by now. His doctors will be able to tell him the appropriate amount of Potassium intake based on his potassium levels in the lab tests. Vomiting can decrease the level of potassium. Good luck to you and your father.

  Rhema C,
Potassium Citrate - C6H5K3O7 + H2O – is often the medicine of choice to make the urine more alkaline. This helps prevent the formation of certain kinds of kidney stones in this way - Potassium citrate attaches to calcium in the urine, preventing the formation of mineral crystals that can develop into kidney stones. In some cases, your health care professional may prescribe this medicine to balance the level of potassium in your body, for example, when the potassium level is low, etc. Potassium is a naturally occurring salt that is important for the normal functioning of the heart, muscles, and nerves. Potassium Gluconate - C6H5K3O7 – is often used to maintain acid-base balance, isotonicity, and electrophysiologic balance throughout body tissues. It is crucial to nerve impulse transmission and contraction of cardiac, skeletal, and smooth muscle. Potassium gluconate is also essential for normal renal function and carbohydrate metabolism. It is not known whether potassium passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. This medication should not be taken without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

I think your intentions are well-meaning, but you're also not a medical provider either.

I've never seen someone with Mono AND Strep Throat in all my years caring for patients. Not to mention, it is a BIG "NO-NO" to use antibiotics with Mono. I would think the doctor said this to convey the "symptoms," because they can often be rather similar.

Hold off on the drops. Strep commonly affects the ears to cause pain, but the drops will be useless because they will NOT work past the eardrum. She will be better off taking some Aleve or Advil to reduce her pain.

Best of luck!

It will not increase your uric acid levels. If you keep yourself well hydrated, you will not have an imbalance in your electrolytes. Also, eating a banana a day will help keep your potassium up. Unless you want to continue to have your doctor add medication after medication to control your blood pressure, you need to start eating a more healthy diet and begin a regular exercise program (walking is easiest - start slowly with short distances and gradually increase your distance and pace until you are walking a minimum of 30 minutes per day). Then, you can reduce your weight and your blood pressure. When starting on Furosemide, your doctor will probably have you have some blood drawn in a few weeks to monitor your potassium levels. Decreasing the amount of protein consumed in your diet will also help reduce your uric acid levels.

People die all the time from allergic reactions. Usually from items that they do not know they are allergic to. Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that can be evidenced by swelling and blockage of the airway.. among other things. DO NOT take a medication that you have already had an allergic reaction to. There are too many alternative medications available.

New medicine and hives all over?
My mom started taking Penicillin 2 weeks ago, but just started breaking out in hives today. She thinks it's from the medicine, but isn't 2 weeks a long time to go without having an allergic reaction? She hasn't eaten anything different today. Could it be stress related?

Thank you!
Also, her non-identical twin sister is allergic to Penicillin.

Under Penicillin's Adverse Effects are many different symptoms including "skin rash, hives, or itching". The recommendation is to call the doctor "immediately" if you experience this or any of the other symptoms listed on the paperwork when you (or she) filled the prescription.

Whats the differenc between Losartan Potassium and Losartan Potassium with HCTZ?
chichi

Reply
Losartan potassium with HCTZ has hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) in it. That is another medication called a diuretic. It also lowers the blood pressure. The two medications often work well together, which is why the drug companies make a pill that contains them both. If one pill, Losartan, is not string enough, you doctor may start the combo pill instead.

Should a person with high blood pressure take sodium bicarbonate for potassium control? or Calcium carbonate?
I am watching my salt intake every day and now the doctor has prescribed a sodium based bicarbonate to offset high potassium. This does not make sense to me - can someone explain please?
The question concerns whether a person on a salt restricted diet with high blood pressure.should use sodium bicarbonate or find another bicarbonate source. I don't use any salt substitutes and am very careful to avoid foods with high potassium such as citrus and banana and so forth.

You have high potassium from salt substitutes. Potassium chloride instead of sodium chloride.
Only 18% of the population shows any effects from sodium. 0% have ever lowered their BP by restricting sodium. I would say, an equal number, have been helped by artificially lowering BP

The point is, you should not be on a salt restricted diet. As long as you are not taking high dietary potassium or potassium sparing diuretics, you should never have to give potassium a second thought. Also, potassium test drawn at the doctors office and then sent out to a lab, will be inaccurate due to blood cell lysis from an old sample. This releases the potassium. At the hospital, the result will come back stating that the sample was lysised. Many times the result is high due to lysis but no warning. We treat the high potassium and the next thing we know, the patient is low.

If I got an allergic reaction from Cephalexin, does that mean I am also allergic to Penicillin?
I was taking Cephalexin for an infection I had. After a few days I developed a bad all over body itchiness. They said it was an allergic reaction. I know if you are allergic to certain antibiotic, you are also allergic to others. Because I am allergic to Cephalexin, does that mean I'm allergic to any other ones, like Penicillin?

I often run into patients with a penicillin allergy. There's about a 10% chance of him/her reacting to a drug of the cephalexin class. I've never really thought about it the other way around.

Since you had what sounds like a classic allergic reaction to cephalexin, I'd avoid penicillin if possible just to be safe.

Is this rash linked to potassium citrate?
I started taking Potassium Citrate 1080 Mg twice a day on July 5 at 7:00 pm. Around 10:00, I noticed 4 red marks on my skin. It doesn't itch, raise or hurt. I still have them plus a few more. I am not taking any other medications or changed my detergents or food. Could that medicine be linked with that medication?

Has anyone mixed adderall xr 10 mg with vicodin? (NOT DRUG ABUSE)?
I just started taking adderall xr 10mg three days ago. The first day it helped a lot with concentration and effectiveness. I am also taking vicodin and penicillin for a mouth infection, also started three days ago. My big issue is that i am having side effects like extreme confusion, fatigue and depression among others. Each of these symptoms can be caused by allergic reactions from penicillin OR adderall. Before I trial and error by discontinuing use of one of them (most likely penicillinn), I was hoping someone could tell me if it's just from mixing adderall and vicodin.

Starting these three together was a bad idea, exactly for the reason you've run in to: which new med is causing the problem? Who wrote you adderall xr on top of the other meds?

However, you are in the situation you are in. Confusion and fatigue are side effects of vicodin. This is why you were told not to drive while taking it. This is not an allergy to vicodin. It is the sedative effect of a powerful pain medicine.

Your symptoms are not an allergy to penicillin or adderall. An allergy would present completely differently. Adderall can disrupt your sleep at night but would give you energy for the day. Three days in, the sleep disruption would be unlikely to overpower the stimulant, so this isn't likely.

Do not stop the penicilin. That will leave you with a drug-resistant infection.

Call the doctors who prescribed the meds and tell them what is going on. If you can't wait until Monday, discontinue the vicodin. It is almost certainly what is causing your fatigue and malaise.

Can you take Diclofenac or Sulindac with Lisinopril?
My fiancee has kidney failure and is on dialysis. He's on several blood pressure medications, including Lisinopril. He has inflammation that he's been taking Advil for, but is concerned about the potassium. However, he feels he needs to take something stronger.

Can he take Sulindac (Clinoril) or Diclofenac (Voltaren) with Lisinopril?

Will this have the same potassium problem?

And if you can't take them together, why not?

  Clinoril - NSAID

Renal Insufficiency
Sulindac pharmacokinetics have been investigated in patients with renal insufficiency. The disposition of sulindac was studied in end-stage renal disease patients requiring hemodialysis. Plasma concentrations of sulindac and it sulfone metabolite were comparable to those of normal healthy volunteers whereas concentrations of the active sulfide metabolite were significantly reduced. Plasma protein binding was reduced and the AUC of the unbound sulfide metabolite was about half that in healthy subjects.
Sulindac and its metabolites are not significantly removed from the blood in patients undergoing hemodialysis.
Since Clinoril is eliminated primarily by the kidneys, patients with significantly impaired renal function should be closely monitored.
A lower daily dosage should be anticipated to avoid excessive drug accumulation.

Long-term administration of NSAIDs has resulted in renal papillary necrosis and other renal injury. Renal toxicity has also been seen in patients in whom renal prostaglandins have a compensatory role in the maintenance of renal perfusion. In these patients, administration of a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug may cause a dose-dependent reduction in prostaglandin formation and, secondarily, in renal blood flow, which may precipitate overt renal decompensation. Patients at greatest risk of this reaction are those with impaired renal function, heart failure, liver dysfunction, those taking diuretics and ACE inhibitors, patients who are volume-depleted and the elderly. Discontinuation of NSAID therapy is usually followed by recovery to the pretreatment state.

Advanced Renal Disease
No information is available from controlled clinical studies regarding the use of Clinoril in patients with advanced renal disease. Therefore, treatment with Clinoril is not recommended in these patients with advanced renal disease. If Clinoril therapy must be initiated, close monitoring of the patient's renal function is advisable.

Voltaren - NSAID

Caution should be used when initiating treatment with Voltaren in patients with considerable dehydration.

Patients at greatest risk of this reaction are those with impaired renal function, heart failure, liver dysfunction, those taking diuretics and ACE inhibitors, and the elderly. Any patient that is currently on dialysis should discuss any medications that are considering to incorporate in their daily regime with their doctor.

the natural and artificial flavors and the maltodextrin are both questionable. whatever the item is i would look it up on google and see if anyone on celiac.com or something has posted about it. just type in _______________ gluten free and usually something will come up for it. until you know for sure i would stay away from it because its iffy.
hope this helps!

Can you explain reaction of toothpaste & acidic carbonated beverages?
Whenever I brush my teeth with toothpaste (flouride, sodium bicarbonate, etc) and then drink a carbonated beverage (citric acid, potassium citrate, aspartame, potassium benzoate), a milky white solid forms in my mouth, which I immediately spit out of course. What is the milky white compound?

But, you should be fine. Other than steriods shrinking testicles, i've never heard of any supplements that do that.

Can potassium lactate trigger a milk allergy?
Theres this good salmon jerky that I get from Washington whenever im in the state and I was recently diagnosed with a milk allergy. I was reading the ingredients to the jerky and saw that it had potassium lactate. Google searches indicate that it may or may not be able to trigger a milk allergy. Can someone elaborate if im able to eat this anymore or not? Thanks.

Hi Sam. Lactate is Lactic Acid. This chemical is NOT the same as Lactose (milk sugar). Lactic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body (e.g. lactic acid build-up after heavy exercise is the cause of muscle soreness).

So, I do not see any relationship between potassium lactate and milk allergies.

I am currently experiencing sever leg cramps, is aldactone (spironolactone) causing this?
I currently am taking aldactone (spironolactone) I was wondering if anyone knew of this causing muscle cramps. Due to this medication being potassium sparing; i wasnt sure if maybe i am having muscle cramps (mostly in legs) due to this medication or an overdose of potassium due to my dosage of 200mg a day. Thanks for your help.....
In deep thought?

I could be. The cramps in the legs could be caused by blood clots. I would have a doctor use a dopler on your leg to see if there is a normal flow of blood getting through your legs. The dopler does not require any surgery.
