| | you didn't say for what purpose. As an antiallergic, as a sedative...If they are suppositories, they are meant for rectal use. On the other way i know that promethazine can be used as un spermicide. And it's a problem, suppositories may not release the active drug at the vaginal level because they are formulated for the rectal mucosa. |

Promethazine & Solodyn (Stomach Ache)?
My stomach has been hurting for the past hour or so feeling as if I may be vomit at some point later. I'm 16 and I take a pill of Solodyn and Claritin every night for Acne and Allergies. (Solodyn is prescribed) I had also taken a Loperamide Hydrochloride for constipation and diarrhea symptoms at about 12:30am EST (The other 2 pills at about 10pm EST. If I use a Promethazine (prescribed for stomach aches after my nasal septum surgery) suppository for this stomach ache now will it affect me negatively with having taken the other meds?

| | Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant that is found in many over-the-counter cough medicines. Codine is a narcotic that is used as cough suppressant, pain reliever, and a hypnotic.
Promethazine is used mostly to prevent nausea. It is also used as part of preoperative sedation to prevent nausea from the other types of sedation used.
If you have both, I don't recommend using them BOTH at the same time. You may overdose. |

| | VC stands for the addition of a decongestant- so you have promethazine which is an antihistamine and codeine an opiod all in one. Sounds like it may work for you. Be careful with driving until you get used to their effect. It may also affect your sleep patterns. |

Help sleeping tablets?
I used to take Zopiclone 7.5mg sleeping tablets.
I've recently been change to Promethazine Hydrochloride 25mg.
Has anyone else been on this as, i don't feel it helps at all.
The doctor said it was a sleeping tablet but is it? help please

| | Hi Doctors seem to be trying not to give out full on sleeping tablets these days so are giving people antihistamines instead. They are not as strong as sleeping tablets and I would think you need to be telling your doctor that they are not working.
Promethazine is derived from a group of medicines called phenothiazines, however, it is also part of the family of sedating antihistamines. Histamine is a chemical in the body that causes the symptoms of an allergic reaction. These can include inflammation of the skin, airways or tissues, rashes, itching of the skin, eyes or nose, nasal congestion and narrowing of the airways. Promethazine blocks the binding of histamine to receptors in many areas of the body and thereby prevents the actions of histamine. This helps prevent and relieve the typical symptoms of an allergic reaction. Histamine may be released from and act in a small (localised) area of the body e.g the nose. Alternatively, histamine can result in a serious or complete body reaction e.g. anaphylactic reaction. Promethazine is useful for the prevention or relief of localised or less serious allergies such as hay fever or itchy rash in addition to serious allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis. Promethazine blocks histamine receptors in an area of the brain called the vomiting centre. It also acts to block other receptors in the vomiting centre (serotonin receptors). Therefore promethazine prevents the vomiting centre from sending the nerve messages to the stomach that would normally result in vomiting. Promethazine also acts on receptors in the gut (muscarinic receptors) to decrease the amount of fluid secreted from the lining of the gut and decrease the actions of the gut muscles. This further aids the treatment or prevention of nausea and vomiting. Promethazine is known as a sedating antihistamine as it enters the brain in significant quantities and causes drowsiness. As a result it is commonly used for the short-term treatment of sleep disturbances and to provide sedation prior to minor procedures or surgery.

Could this drug I'm taking be causing my depression?
I've got depression. I haven't been diagnosed, nor do I want to tell my mum about it. It's all come out of what's happened since my start at school through to grade 11, and I'm a male, 15 years old. But I think this drug that I'm taking might be worsening it.
It's not anything big. It's just a simple antihistamine. It's called Phenergan, and the tablets are 10mg each. It's "scientific name", I guess, is Promethazine Hydrochloride. It says that the only side effect is drowsiness, which has affected me, and it supposedly contains lactose, which I'm not intolerant to.
Is this Phenergan actually making my depression worse or is the depression just all from my life experiences? |

| | Why are you taking so much Phenergan? It is typically used as an antiemetic (reducing nausea) and has been almost completely replaced as a drug to treat allergies. Although sometimes it is used for an acute allergy. No matter what I highly recommend you look into another medication.
Can it be making you worse? Yes. Is it actually making you worse? It is almost impossible to say. It may also be a combination of factors.
Phenergan is also, as the other person said, a bit more complex. Actually many of the best antiemetics are better known as antipsychotics like haloperidol. Antipsychotics are also antihistamines, actually the first antipsychotic was developed to treat allergies and it was tested on psychiatric patients and many got better. Phenergan falls within this group of drugs that are antihistamines but have many other actions that control psychosis. Phenergan is not used to treat psychosis because it is very weak and not very effective but it still retains those antiemetic properties.
My point is that despite the fact Phenergan is weak and you are on a tiny dose it still does impact some of those neurotransmitters in your brain like dopamine.
See your doctor, try a new medication and see what happens. If you feel better then it was the Phenergan. Also no drug on Earth has one side effect, although drowsiness is most common it has other side effects.
Lastly I don't know exactly why you have not told your mum about your depression but you should. Depression is not weakness or failure, and if it has gone beyond the mild depression everyone has from time to time then you need to get help. |

Can someone tell me why most MDs don't recommend taking the antihistamine DYPHENHYDRAMINE HCL (25mg) for sleep?
Diphenhydramine has sedative properties and is widely used in nonprescription sleep aids with a maximum recommended dose of 50 mg (as the hydrochloride salt) being mandated by the U.S. FDA. In the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and other countries, a 50–100 mg recommended dose is permitted.
The drug is an ingredient in several products sold as sleep aids, either alone or in combination with other ingredients such as acetaminophen (paracetamol). An example of the latter is Tylenol PM. Examples of products having diphenhydramine as the only active ingredient include Unisom gelcaps (the tablet form contains doxylamine, a different active ingredient), Tylenol Simply Sleep, Nytol, and Sominex (the version sold in the US; that sold in the UK uses promethazine).

| | A question I was also frustrated with! I think most doctors don't recommend it because it is really easy to build a tolerance to it, and then you don't have that as an option for allergies etc.
I wish allergy specialist would warn you as well. I had an appt with an allergy specialist, and they did not warn me that tylenol pm was actually acetaminophen and dyphenhydramine.
It definitely needs to be marked on the bottles and doctors need to advise patients to try it short term before giving an Rx for a "knock you out" pill. If your sleep disorder is associated with something other than a short term sleep slump, then the dyphenhydramine won't work anyway.
I also wish they would have people look into Melatonin in the supplement aisle. Worked like a charm for a couple of my family members, but didn't help me much. |
