Why cant you use morphine sulfate to treat surgical pain?
I had a herniated disc in my L5S1 area of my back. The doctor gave me morphine sulfate for the pain. Last week I had decompression surgery to correct the problem. I was given a different pain med. that works very well but the doctor told me not to use the morphine for pain. I was given morphine in the hospital but I cant use the morphine sulfate for pain at home. The literature they give with medication when you get a perscription filled even says not to use morphine sulfate to treat postsurgery pain. I just want to know if there is a medical reason why you cant use morphine sulfate to treat surgical pain.

Can morphine sulfate be IV'd through the arm?
Just wondering can someone crush up morphine sulfate and shoot it up? Or does it not work in water? Its Morphine Sulfate not regular morphine. I found needles in my brothers room next to this bottle of morphine sulfates. Please let me know

Dosage info of zinc sulfate supplements?
My dermatologist prescribed zinc sulfate supplements for acne.
She just said take them an hour after meals. Each tablet weighs 200 mg.

I'm seventeen years old, medium build. How much am i suppose to take? how many times a day ? What are the dangers of taking high doses?

Does zinc sulfate really help in clearing up skin?

Yes, zinc is good for clearing up the skin. My question is, isn't all of the dosage info on the bottle you got? It should tell you how many times a day and how many pills at a time. If you are still confused after looking at the bottle or info that came with the bottle (all prescriptions come with information on dosage and side effects) then please call your doctor.

Ferrous Sulfate supplement - Is one that says, "Equivalent" to 325mg as good as one that actually is 325mg?
Doctor ordered me to take ferrous sulfate, 325mg, because of very low iron levels in my blood test. In researching which product to buy, I see some that say they HAVE 325mg of ferrous sulfate, and some that say they have (for example) "65mg Iron, Equivalent to 325mg ferrous sulfate.

Is there really a difference between the two, and is one better than the other for iron therapy?

Thanks!

Ferrous sulfate is an extremely oxidative form of iron, meaning it causes cell death when ingested. Many children die each year mistaking the tablets for candy. It's fairly harmless in adults but it does still cause cell damage especially to the liver if taken in high doses or for too long. Ferrous fumarate is a much safer and more tolerable form of iron to take but it can be harder to find. Your doc may be able to find it for you on his computer if you can't.

All minerals have to be bound or chelated to something for it to reach our cells. In this case iron is attached to a sulfate molecule 325mg in total, but the actual iron content (also known as elemental amount) is 65mg. Both the products you mention have the same amount of elemental iron in them. Hope this helps.

Can I take Methadone with Morphine Sulfate?
My doctor prescribed I take Methadone with Morphine Sulfate to treat my intense lower back pain. I was originally taking Methadone with Roxycodone but today she replaced it with Morphine Sulfate. My pharmacist seemed kinda concerned about me taking those two together. Is it safe to take?

Reply
Your pharmacist is right to be concerned, but I'm sure it is because of the strength of meds, in other words he/she is probably worried that you will be to "high".
You were probably prescribed 10mg methadone tabs, if so it is common. Reason being both methadone and Morphine sulfate are opiates, that means they work through the spinal cord to alleviate pain.
You are absolutely right to check and double check your meds. All I can tell you is that it was eventually prescibed to me this way and I really do have better pain relief now.
Of course everyone reacts differantly to differant medications and in my case we have been working to find a good pain solution for quite a while. Chronic Back Pain is so difficult to treat (pain wise) because levels of pain vary so much that the doctors really must track our communication with them as well as our physical condition, so be sure if you are uncomfortable to contact his office asap.
Good Luck to you, I hope you find the pain relief that you need.

Do you know any toothpaste that doesnt have sodium lauryl sulfate in it?
Sodium lauryl sulfate is an ingredient present in all toothpaste. It seems that is very harmful for our gum and teeth since it is a detergent.. It seems that it is like high fructose corn syrup that is present in so many kind of food and it is the culprit of obseity. Well now it is sodium lauryl sulfate in toothpaste that it seems to be the enemy in the fight against cavities and gum recession.

Is a body wash with Sodium Laureth Sulfate better than a body wash with Ammonium Laureth Sulfate?
Some leading body washes contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate, but others contain Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate and Ammonium Laureth Sulfate. The difference between SLS and ALS isn't really notable, but is there a difference between the body washes?

I am just guessing here, but here's the logic: need sodium chloride to make sure there is an osmotic balance in the solution and the organism; and glucose to increase the density of the solution so the organisms float to the top. I have no idea if this is correct.

Medicinal Allergies?
I was told at about 10 I could possibly have an allergy to sulfur drugs when I got a rash after taking a sulfur antibiotic, I was never tested the doc wasnt sure but said better safe than sorry assume you have an allergy to sulfur drugs. At the time they didnt know I had eczema so that could have been the cause of the rash as you tend to break out when sick.

My question is should I refrain from taking prenatal vitamins containing zinc sulfate, cupric sulfate or magnesium sulfate or is that a different make up than the sulfur in antibiotics? The only reaction I had the the antibiotic was a rash, which they arent even positive if it was the cause.

I am allergic to sulfa also, same thing,rash's.... But take your prenatal vitamins, those are very important and it's not the same thing....Per chance if ever you get a reaction to vitamins, just look at them and start eliminating what you possibly think it could be, but vitamins are very important as your diet is through your pregnancy...

Magnesium Sulfate Paste?
I have a paronychia (swelling around the nailbed) and I heard that magnesium sulfate (epsom) would work well if I either soaked it or applied the paste to it. I heard that it causes the pus to come to the surface and cause the paronychia to burst. Does anyone know where I can get Magnesium Sulfate Paste? Or will a soak in Epsom Salt work.

Reply
The paste is more convenient than soaking, but actually not as good as several soaks in hot (hot, but still comfortable) epsom salt solution. With the paste, you put it on, cover it, and forget about it. With soaking, you need to get a container that is large enough for the water to hold the heat for 10-15 minutes, and sit there with you hand in the container several times per day.

Does prolong use of quinine sulfate cause blood disorders? Used over 15 years?
Platelette count ranges from 43,000 to 67,000. Avg. of 50,000

Well, I don't know the answers to all those questions, but I know that Quinine is used for malaria attacks and my brother used it whenever he had an attack for years. I understand that there is now a cure for malaria (not sure, I only heard it once).
I don't know what your condition is, or how your platelet count would relate to needing back surgery. If your doctor(s) won't do it, I assume that they have determined that you don't need it or it is contraindicated by your other condition(s).
Do you maybe just have some vertebrae out of place and need a Chiropractic adjustment? Have you had X-Rays or any tests to determine what your back problem is? I assume that if you have a kidney infection, the doctors would have found it.
Here is something I found on platelet count. This makes it sound as if yours is extremely low, unless you left out a zero. If it is truly that low compared to the normal range shown below, that sounds as if you may have a problem with your immune system.

Normal results. The normal range for a platelet count is 150000-450000 platelets per microliter of blood. Abnormal results. An abnormally low platelet level ...

my 2 year old ingested albuterol sulfate inhalation solution?
My son possibly drank his sisters albuterol sulfate solution 0.083 percent what are some signs that I need to watch for and what can I do
Jennifer Jude
04/17/11
Reply
No need for panic! The albuterol sulfate inhalation solution comes in prepackaged squeeze containers and doesn't hold more then a few cc's of solution. On top of that it is also diluted with a saline solution so when you squeeze it into the SVN (small volume nebulizer), the worst that will happen is that your son will get a mild case of diarrhea. The solution is meant to be inhaled yes, BUT, once the solution has been inhaled it passes through small alveoli into the bloodstream which will just give the same effect as if you drank the solution. Nothing happens to your daughter, nothing is going to happen to your son. The medication is used to treat constricted airways and help with bronchial problems, asthma, etc. If your son has none of these problems the medication will have no affect on him. The only way this would be cause for concern is if he ingested a LARGE amount or he did this on a regular basis. If you're still worried you can call the poison control center at 1-800-222-1222 and talk to a professional just to be on the safe side.

Still, keep a close eye on him in case he has a reaction since at that young of an age you are still learning about allergies to certain medications

I am anemic and have been for awhile. Despite 2 iron shots in the past month and taking 325mg of ferrous sulfate a day with calcium, my iron dropped. I am currently a 7.7 (I am not bleeding).   There's no problem with that in general. Magnesium Stearate is a common flow agent that is used in the processing of the pills themselves and isn't a sufficient source of Magnesium. Also, the studies I've read say that Magnesium Stearate isn't absorbed by the body, so there wouldn't be much of any concern anyway.
You'll be fine with that.

My bottle says 100 mg is the minimum, so you could easily be safe and (assuming you have a balanced diet) split the pill in two. I take it for my prostate gland (and it increases my sex-drive, too!!) and it helps improve the immune system. Ignore any expiration date - ZnSO4 is a chemical and very stable. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zinc_sulfate says it is used to kill plants and mosses, so I wouldn't take great amounts over long periods of time...even not taking it for a week would at least let your body adjust to its own natural level - even if you might have symptoms of zinc deficiency-which makes me think that your diet may need improvement instead of taking supplements.
------------Off-topic------------
By the way, there is international legislation now being implemented and considered by the FDA which would make vitamin and mineral supplements, herbs and health-food stores illegal. Their standard is called the Codex Alimentarius. Spend 30 mins becoming familiar with it, please. If you want to, at least, have the freedom to choose to take Zinc Sulfate and even vitamin C as supplements, then you should be aware of, and act, when the opportunity arises, to prevent passage of this truly abhorrent legislation. This is pure FDA/corporate (big pharmaceutical industry) influence on government policy. It has to be stopped. We worked against it during the early-90's, but the THEY in business + government are trying to do it all over again with intimidation, even threats of arrest and closure of health food stores/ nutritional supplements distributors and the health-food industry in general. They continually have to be beaten back - their assaults never seem to end. They have no concept of human nature except that of power and dominance which they use to continually extract unfair profit by putting us, the consumers in weak positions in which normal behavior, a good diet, is prohibited and made illegal. Good luck, and thanks for reading this, if you've gotten this far...

albuterol sulfate?
can albuterol sulfate inhalation solution be inter changed with xopenex levalbuterol inhalation liquid solution
jeff o

Reply
Yes, many people cant handle the side effects from the albuterol. jittery, shaky, increased heart rate to name a few. Also, albuterol only last around 4 hours.
Xopenex (levalbuterol) does not cause these irritating side effects (for the most part) and last around 6 hours.
They are both bronchodilators. Xopenex tends to be a little more expensive, but if you are in need of alubterol treatments every four hours, switching to xopenex would estimate to cost the same, since it is only taken every six hours.
some physicians still recommend the xopenex be taken every 4 hours if a patient is in distress.
Please only take your medication as directed.

In my opinion Xopenex is the drug of choice for people with any lung disease or disorder!
hope i helped!

What is the difference between Codeine Sulfate, Codeine, and Hydrocodone?
I have chronic cough and muscle stiffness and pain often. I have been prescribed everything from Tylenol 3 (30mg Codeine and Tylenol) to Hydrocodone 10mg/1000mg.

I've noticed that codeine seems quite weaker than Hydrocodone. If I take 2 hydrocodones, the same feeling takes 3-4 codeine tablets to acheive the desired feeling.

Recently, someone told me I should try Codeine Sulfate (60MG), they are small white tablets and contain no Tylenol, Asprin, or Ibuprofen. If I take 2 of these, will they be more similar to Hydrocodone or the Tylenol 3's?

What is the difference between Codeine Sulfate, Codeine, and Hydrocodone?
Repkying to first answer someone left.

Tylenol 3's and 4's are the combination of codeine with acetemetophin.

Hydrocodones (Vicodin, Lortab...etc) is the combination of Hydrocodone with acetemetophin.

Vicodin 5/500 is 5mg hydrocodone/500mg acetemetohin.

Tylenol 3's are 30mg Codeine / 300mg Acetemetophin.

Hydrocodone must be a different form of codeine that is stronger. MY main question is....What is the difference between Hydrocodone and Codeine? And where does codeine sulfate fit in the mix.

I do like your answer, it just lacks the main information I need.

I'm not familiar with codeine sulfate vs. codeine.

I know that hydrocodone is a combination of codeine plus an NSAID. I think it's acetaminophen.

Hydrocodone will be more powerful than codeine alone, because the 2 drugs combined provide a stronger effect than either would separately. You can get the same thing from taking codeine and tylenol pills separately, 10 mg and 1000mg respectively. It's the same thing.

Antibiotics.?
I'm uncircumcised, and I sort of over masturbated, and since I don't use lubricant, the skin of the penis became irritated and starting peeling off. So now I'm using "Triple Aintibiotic Ointment" on it to prevent infection. (Polymyxin B sulfate - Bacitracin Zinc - Neomycin Sulfate)
What would happen if I left the antibiotic ointment on for extended periods of time? Like if I went to sleep with it, would anything harmful or negative happen? How often should I "renew" the ointment?

Thanks for your answers.

What is the difference between Ferrous Sulfate and Chelated Iron?
So if I had iron pills that said Ferrous Sulfate 325mg, but can't get a hold of them anymore, now I take Chelated Iron pills 29mg, is this a safe switch over?

I wish I could ask my doctor but he's never available and the damn nurses in his office apparently went to school for nothing b/c they can't give me an answer!

Help!?

Iron, Chelated (Circulatory) is a form of iron (ferrous gluconate) that’s usually well-absorbed by the body. In this formulation the iron is enhanced with vitamin C, calcium and a unique base of rose hips, mullein leaves, chickweed herb, thyme herb and yellow dock root.

Ferrous sulfate provides the iron needed by the body to produce red blood cells. It is used to treat or prevent iron-deficiency anemia, a condition that occurs when the body has too few red blood cells because of pregnancy, poor diet, excess bleeding, or other medical problems.

So they are basically the same.

What's the difference between albuterol and albuterol sulfate?
I always used to get albuterol but my last prescription filled was albuterol sulfate. Is this the new form of albuterol?

No. It's always been albuterol sulfate. Most doctors will just write "albuterol" on the prescription because pharmacists know that is albuterol sulfate.

What's wrong with a woman if she goes to a gynecologist for blood test and takes ferrous sulfate?
A friend of mine recently went to a gynecologist many times, had her blood sample taken for examination, and takes in Ferrous Sulfate. I asked her what's wrong but she's not really telling. I think she's pregnant but I don't have enough medical knowledge to say.

Can psoriasis be caused by products with sodium laureth sulfate?
I have never been to a dermatologist for it because my dad, uncle, cousin and sister have it too. But I was spraying my hair with detangler when I accidently got some on my face and it burned and turned red with bumps, sort of like what psoriasis looks like when its new. Then I remembered reading something about laureth sulfate aggravating your skin, looked at the back of the bottle and thats in it, both my detangler and my shampoo. Has anybody heard of this before?
I forgot, I only have psoriasis on my scalp, nowhere else.

I haven't heard of this particular agent causing psoriasis. If you are genetically pre-disposed to p. , then it can be triggered by anything, I am sure. You may want to try the anti-psoriaisis spray and cream for your scalp. Get it from http://www.champori.com It helped my plaque p. like nothing else I tried: it cleared after just 3 weeks of treatment, and I haven't had a relapse for a year now.

I have sore eyes and I accidentally put an ear drop into my eye, what to do?
I have sore eyes and was prescribed to take Tobramycin Dexamethasone but I accidentally put Neomycin Sulfate Polymyxin B Sulfate Hydrocortisone, which is an ear drop. I have mistaken this one as an eyedrop, since they have the same packaging. I didn't see the label. Do I have dangers of getting blind? Was it just fine? I thought putting immediate water into my eyes would remove the chemicals, after seeing the labels. PLEASE ANSWER ASAP. I'M AFRAID!

Sodium laureth sulfate, or sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES), is a detergent and surfactant found in many personal care products such as soaps, shampoos, toothpaste etc. It is an inexpensive and very effective foaming agent made by mixing sulfuric acid, ester, and sodium salt. SLS does not necessarily give good hair texture. SLS is mainly used to produce the foam in the shampoos. SLS is safe for the body as long as it is diluted in water. Some researchers say that excessive use of SLS leads to cancer which is seriously dangerous.

What is the difference between codeine and morphine addiction?
If someone is addicted to codeine(hydrocodone etc) and quits cold turkey,
is his/her symptoms the same as someone addicted to roughly the same amount of morphine sulfate?

And,do morphine pills contain codeine as their addictive ingredient,or are hydrocodone and oxycodone very different from morphine sulfate?

Thanks,research purposes.
thank you for your answer

Codeine is a mild opiate, that breaks down to morphine in the liver. The withdrawals are not as bad as other opiates. Hydrocodone and oxycodone are semi synthetic opiates derived from codeine. They are fairly strong and the addiction potential is much higher than codeine. He withdrawals can be pretty bad. Morphine is the gold standard of hospitals. It's abuse potential is very high, and the addiction potential is also very high. The withdrawals can be very bad. Morphine pills contain morphine sulfate, not codeine or any other opiate. Vicodin contain hydrocodone and acetaminophen, oxycontin contains oxycodone, and a Tylenol series, Tylenol 1, 2, 3, and 4 contain differing amounts of codeine and acetaminophen.

If it's just a screening test (most likely if the doctor does it in his office), then it should just show up as an opiate. However, if it's positive he may send the sample for what's referred to as confirmatory testing. This may determine which specific opiate was detected and at what concentration.

Can I use neosporin with a sulfa allergy?
I recently found out that I have an allergy to sulfa drugs after using Bactrim for an injury which had gotten infected.

I was wondering if it was okay to use neosporin on wounds, since it contains neomycin sulfate. Is neosporin considered a sulfa product as well, or is neomycin sulfate in a completely different category? I've never had an allergy to neosporin in the past, but I thought I should ask someone who knows a thing or two about pharmacology. Thanks to anyone with answers.

By giving her these morphine, IF she is an addict, which it seems so (she won't believe it, but that's normal), then you're being a codependent by giving her these pills. If it bothers you that she gets high, then don't let her. Or at least in her presence. Sending her this message will give her a message that her life is becoming unmanageable because of drugs. Which is the first step of the Twelve Steps of AA/NA.
"I admit that I am powerless over my addiction. That my life has become unmanageable."
If you want more info, send me an email. charmedguy18@gmail.com
I will give you a more in-depth opinion if you send me the frequency of drug use, the problems she's had because of or relating to drug use, loss of interest in other activites because of drug use, etc...
The above person is partially right. If she's an addict, she will probably steal them anyway. But a methadone treatment center isn't necessary if she's not PHYSICALLY addicted. One DOES NOT need to have a physical dependency to be an addict. A psychological dependancy is actually the thing people need to worry about, as people who take Benzodiazepines and Opiates and don't do it to get high on them get physically addicted, but not psychologically. Being psychologically addicted means that the person LOVES to get high. They'll go to any means to GET high. They do things that are in spite of their own previous morals to get high. They take one drink or drug, and cannot stop. They have cravings to get high and they are even worse once a drug enters the body.
There is, however, people who are NOT addicts, but do get high on occasion. These people don't need more to get high. They don't need to get high. But they do enjoy it, and will do it if there is anything to get high with available. There are responsible pill users, pot smokers, coke blowers, even SOMETIMES heroin users.
A fun fact is, there seems to be no known people who can use crack or crystal Methamphetamine and not immediately become psychologically dependent.

Edit: To the person that says Cocaine is "non-addictive" that is a bunch of BULLSHIT! Cocaine CAN and IS used responsibly by SOME people, but is very FAR from being non-addictive. If used just once too many times, it is VERY addictive. In fact, it is one of the MOST addictive substances known to man. This is because it triggers activity in the same places that we get the 'rewards' for drinking water, eating food, breathing, sleeping. Anything that does this is VERY addictive. Period.
ALSO: Barack Obama does NOT support the legalization of Cocaine.

what is it about sodium lauryl sulfate that gives you canker sores?
because i have 3 canker sores and im pretty sure that its from the new toothpaste i bought. it says one of the inactive ingredients is sodium lauryl sulfate... i read that it can cause canker sores, so what does that mean? that im allergic to it?

yeah i disposed the toothpaste of mines that had it and no more cold sores!

sls dries your mouth , and when you accidently bite your mouth on the inside.... canker sores are likely to form. i had 3 which disappeared but then 3 more appeared!

im using a toothpaste i got online that does not contain fluoride and sls.

you're not allergic to it, sls is a detergent that dries your mouth so saliva can't protect you from infections

Can morphine sulfate spike bloodpressure?
My husband started taking morphine sulfate two weeks ago because the doctor thought loratabs were not controling his back pain effectivley. After he takes the morphine, which works very well, he gets a headache after a few hours that feels like pressure at the top of his head, the same as if he forgot to take his blood pressure meds. Could the morp. be making his b.p. spike? He only takes 15mg once a day of the slow release type of morphine. Thanks for answering!

Morphine usuaaly drops your BP and this is one of the standard precautions to look out for.

Slow release Morphine hits it's peak at 2 hours and then goes from there so the Morphine maybe giving him the headache.

It's usually not contraindicated with high BP. Meaning that it shouldn't really be given to someone with a high BP. Because it drops the BP.

It could be that his blood presure is decreasing instead of increasing causing a headache from the increase of blood flow.

I would speak to the Doctor about it the next time you see him/her. Or if it's really hurting him ring and speak to the Doctor.

He is on a very low SR dose.

PAM S
Read the answer CORRECTLY. I said it WILL drop BP which is when the blood vessels open up to allow too much blood flow through. Including to the brain. THIS CAN CAUSE HEADACHES but the INCREAESED BLOOD FLOW. Not DECREAESED as in high BP.

I am a nurse. I didn't get my information from a nurse.

Ingredients: water, glycerin, alcohol (5 WT% / 5% P/V), hydrogen peroxide, sodium hexametaphosphate, poloxamer 407, sodium citrate, aroma / flavour, sodium saccharin, citric acid.

No Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, but I wouldn't use an alcohol-based mouthwash myself.

I prefer Oral-B Anti-bacterial with Fluoride (Active ingredients: Cetylpyridinium chloride monohydrate 0.05%, sodium fluoride 0.05%), but that's just me.

If it's the whitening you want, the mouthwash isn't the most effective way to get your teeth whiter. I would try Crest Whitestrips, or save up for bleaching trays from a dental office.
