Is Rx Bacitracin for opthalmic use the same as Bacitracin Zinc?
I was given an Rx but I already have a couple packets of Bacitracin Zinc. Are they the same?
This is going on the eyelid, not actually in the eye, BTW.

They aren't exactly the same, but I don't know if the topical one would hurt except that I'm sure it would burn like hell if you got it in your eye. I'd recommend getting the ophthalmic one, or the pharmacist might be able to tell you in the store because he or she would have the package inserts that they could check and see just how different they are.

The concentration of bacitracin is the same according to what I can find, but my concern is that the inactive ingredients may not be appropriate for use in or around the eye.

Which is better for a popped pimple, bacitracin zinc (Neosporin) or zinc oxide (Desitin)?
This is for a popped pimple that wasn't "ready". Can someone please tell me which will get rid of the thing faster or how to prevent a scab (besides a band-aid)?

I appreciate any help!

Neosporin will help prevent infection which can increase the risk of scarring.

It certainly sounds like balanitis or a yeast infection.

I'm not sure you should be using that ointment - it might help now, but it could also make things worse later. There are things you could try.

First, make sure you pull back your foreskin and wash under there every time you take a shower/bath. Only use water, as it's possible that if you used soap on your foreskin/penis, that could be the cause of your balanitis. Some soaps are just too harsh for the sensitive skin there, so try not using any soap for a few days. When you're done, make sure you dry the area gently with a towel or let it "air dry" for a minute or two before returning your foreskin back over the glans (penis head).

When you urinate, pull back your foreskin and when you're done, wipe the last drops of urine on either a piece of toilet paper or the back of your hand (you're going to wash your hands anyway). This will help prevent drops of urine from remaining under your foreskin which could sometimes make balanitis/yeast infections a bit worse.

Next, you could try applying body lotion to the affected area. If it's dry, flaky, itchy, etc, applying lotion to where that's happening could help. Lastly, drink cranberry juice and eat yogurt, as these foods help the body fight off yeast infections.

I hope this helps. If it doesn't clear or get better within 2-3 days, then call your doctor. He/she will have some kind of antibacterial/antifungal cream for the area. Oh, and it may be a good idea to abstain from masturbating or sex until you're foreskin's back to normal as friction can make things worse.

Is Bacitracin to be applied even after scab was removed?
Basically, I had a scab on my face and I used bacitracin on it. When the scab fell off, I have this pinkish color crater thing. It's small but noticeable up close. Do I continue to use bacitracin as recommended by the doctor or stop use once the scab is off?

Is your priority concealing or healing?

If it's concealing, I'd use a decent men's face cream, which are designed to soothe, protect, and moderately heal minor scrapes from shaving. There are a million in any Walgreens with the shaving supplies.

If healing's your top priority, I'd sooner think an Antiobiotic Cream like Neosporin than Bacetracin on an opened wound.

Question about Bacitracin Zinc Ointment?
I'd like to know if the body becomes resistant to the ointment after many uses like regular antibiotics.

You don't really become resistant to it, but if you use bacitracin too much it can break down the normal healthy bacteria on the skin and cause a rash.

zinc sulphate safe for long term intake?
I am suffering from acne from more than 15 years. 2 weeks back I read about taking zinc supplements. I found zinc sulphate (zincolak capsules) and started taking them. So my face is clear and no more oily skin since then. I am just wanting to know can I take this supplement forever?
I have already used home remedies / anti biotics. And concluded that hormones have been making my life miserable. So zinc can help with this ( i know). Please provide your input regarding Zinc sulphate only. thanx
Or should I switch to zinc gluconate or zinc picolinate ? please advice

Can bacitracin ointment heal genital herpes lescions?
My bestfriend would apply bacitracin ointment on the lescions when she gets her genital herpes outbreaks and she said its helps in healing it faster. Also, she had had sex with her husband in the past when the lescions weren't completely healed and her husband hasn't contracted the STD yet. Would it be that the bacitracin helped kill the virus?

u are not supposed to put any kind of ointment on the blisters. i would think it could make your genitals very sensitive or irriitated. just let them dry up and don't put anything on it. bacitracin will not kill the virus. since it is a virus it is now in her blood and will be there permanently for the rest of her life. she should take some meds like valtrex to help heal the outbreaks faster, to help control them and prevent spreading herpes.

I'm not able to find any info on why you would use zinc sulphate rather than zinc as a supplement.

All solid zinc supplements are zinc compounds such as zinc sulphate, zinc oxide, zinc carbonate, zinc chelated amino acids and a few others.

Solid metallic zinc, in its elemental form, is not a zinc supplement.

Colloidal zinc (liquid form of zinc) is an exception. This liquid form of zinc would undoubtedly be better absorbed than all the solid forms. A web search for "colloidal zinc" will give you further details.

What causes thinning of the skin around the anus to the point that small fissures open up and how do you cure?
I wear cotton boxer briefs, so breathability shouldn't be an issue and I do not engage in any form of anal sexual play. I've even resorted to cleansing the area with alcohol-free baby wipes and using Bacitracin Zinc antibiotic ointment.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

What is the effect of zinc oxide on acne?
I just bought a tube of zinc oxide ointment, because I've heard it works on acne and scratches...

Basically what happened was I had a couple gross pimples and I squeezed them so hard I made scratches in my face, as if I fell on the concrete or something.

Does zinc help? If so how fast can I see results? How should I use it??

Antibiotics.?
I'm uncircumcised, and I sort of over masturbated, and since I don't use lubricant, the skin of the penis became irritated and starting peeling off. So now I'm using "Triple Aintibiotic Ointment" on it to prevent infection. (Polymyxin B sulfate - Bacitracin Zinc - Neomycin Sulfate)
What would happen if I left the antibiotic ointment on for extended periods of time? Like if I went to sleep with it, would anything harmful or negative happen? How often should I "renew" the ointment?

Thanks for your answers.

Not sure of the first but am told to avoid 100mg/day for long periods. Men RDA is 15 and women's is 12.
I took 50mg/day for a while and it may have been that which set me off off, but truthfully just the reduction to a safer dosage made me feel better.
I still experiment with different supplements but keep my zinc at a norm.

My bottle says 100 mg is the minimum, so you could easily be safe and (assuming you have a balanced diet) split the pill in two. I take it for my prostate gland (and it increases my sex-drive, too!!) and it helps improve the immune system. Ignore any expiration date - ZnSO4 is a chemical and very stable. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zinc_sulfate says it is used to kill plants and mosses, so I wouldn't take great amounts over long periods of time...even not taking it for a week would at least let your body adjust to its own natural level - even if you might have symptoms of zinc deficiency-which makes me think that your diet may need improvement instead of taking supplements.
------------Off-topic------------
By the way, there is international legislation now being implemented and considered by the FDA which would make vitamin and mineral supplements, herbs and health-food stores illegal. Their standard is called the Codex Alimentarius. Spend 30 mins becoming familiar with it, please. If you want to, at least, have the freedom to choose to take Zinc Sulfate and even vitamin C as supplements, then you should be aware of, and act, when the opportunity arises, to prevent passage of this truly abhorrent legislation. This is pure FDA/corporate (big pharmaceutical industry) influence on government policy. It has to be stopped. We worked against it during the early-90's, but the THEY in business + government are trying to do it all over again with intimidation, even threats of arrest and closure of health food stores/ nutritional supplements distributors and the health-food industry in general. They continually have to be beaten back - their assaults never seem to end. They have no concept of human nature except that of power and dominance which they use to continually extract unfair profit by putting us, the consumers in weak positions in which normal behavior, a good diet, is prohibited and made illegal. Good luck, and thanks for reading this, if you've gotten this far...

If I'm allergic to Zinc Oxide, am I allergic to Octinoxate as well?
I've known since I was a baby that I'm allergic to Zinc Oxide. I recently purchased a moisturizer containing Zinc Oxide (I didn't know this at the time.) My face began burning, itching, and becoming severely irritated. I immediately washed it off and haven't used it since. However, I purchased a new moisturizer today that doesn't contain Zinc Oxide. However, it contains Octinoxate. My face developed the same symptoms, and turned red and irritated. Are Octinoxate and Zinc Oxide the same thing? Or do they contain similar ingredients? I'm trying to figure out what in this new moisturizer is giving my skin a reaction.

Thank-you. (:

You may be allergic to more than one substance. In case of creams and dyes there is no guarantee that you will not be allergic to a product even if all the contents looks safe. The only way is to use it on a small area at a safe body part like below the arm and wait for 48 hrs. If there is no allergic reaction then you can use it on the face.

Dosage info of zinc sulfate supplements?
My dermatologist prescribed zinc sulfate supplements for acne.
She just said take them an hour after meals. Each tablet weighs 200 mg.

Does zinc sulfate really help in clearing up skin?

Yes, zinc is good for clearing up the skin. My question is, isn't all of the dosage info on the bottle you got? It should tell you how many times a day and how many pills at a time. If you are still confused after looking at the bottle or info that came with the bottle (all prescriptions come with information on dosage and side effects) then please call your doctor.

Vaginal yeast infection. Why wont the symptoms go away? Would it be okay for me to use Bacitracin zinc? Help!?
This is pretty long but im miserable so try to bear with me.... After about a week and a half of taking penicillin for a strep throat, I was diagnosed with a yeast infection on moday. I was told that my infection wasn't too serious and that i could buy an over the counter treatment because i am allergic to the persciption, so i bought vagistat-1and used on tuesday night before bed (after taking a shower). I also bought a vaginal itching and pain relieving cream and slept with that on too, which relieved the itching completely. When i woke up on wednesday morning i had horrible pain and tremendous swelling of the vulva and labia area with no serious itching and a very small amout of the yeasty discharge compared to what i had before the treatment (the swelling and pain was so bad that i had to ice it and take aleve to help it go down). The swelling seemed to go down but i was still very sore down there. I was thinking that this reaction could have came from the pain relieving cream, so i washed it off in the shower and did not put it on again that day, but i was still sore. When i went to use the bathroom before bed i noticed that the swelling was back, so i took more aleve and iced it again. Thursday morning i had no swelling, little pain, and no yeasty discharge so i thought i was going to be okay... that is untill the itching came back. I still did not use the pain relieving cream and i restrained myself from scratching at it because the irritation wasn't too severe, and i knew it would get worse if i touched it. I was okay for the whole day, took a shower and slept fine the whole night. Friday morning (today) i noticed the discharge was coming back heavy again and slight itching again but, no swelling and just mild pain so i ignored it. About and hour ago the itching became so intense i could't help but to scratch. I scratched so much that i made myself bleed. I'm also very sore, swollen again, and still the heavy discharge. I tried the pain relieving cream again, it seemed to help ALOT. I also iced it and took aleve to bring the swelling down. I dont think the treatment helped, i have heavy yeast and discharge and even though i'm okay for right now, i know its all gonna happen again. (I'm positive it's not an STD or bacterial vaginitis by the way). Any advice? Is this common? I'm miserable and don't know what to do anymore. Should i buy another treatment? Would i be okay to put bacitracin zinc first-aid antibiotic ointment on it and possibly little bit inside of me to try helping? Please help, i'm desperate! :(

At this point, you have tried everything that I would suggest and you should go back to the doctor, or even the Urgent care. This is soooo miserable that it will drive you crazy if you don't. If you can't get it, try taking benadryl, it will help with the itching, and sit in a cool bath. Take a book and do not scratch! It will make it worse. I would not use the cream again, it sounds like you have had a reaction to it. You could also try plain yogurt, I know that it sounds weird, but it is a natural treatment for yeast infections, and actually cools and soothes, but be sure to try it on a small area first to make sure that it does not burn from the scratching. I used to have this problem with every dose of antibiotics that I had, it is very frustrating. Good luck

Zinc is great (especially on your face/lips if you happen to be a person in the sun ALL day).
Zinc Oxide is a NATURAL, PHYSICAL sunscreening agent that sits on your skin refl ecting dangerous UVA and UVB rays. Chemical sunscreens on the other hand, merely diffuse rays, usually just UVB. Most chemical sunscreens offer little or no protection against UVA rays.

I am sure this company is just boasting because it doesn't come on to your skin as 'pure white'.
I am sure if you search further you can find plenty of sun screen or zinc without paying $70!

Is Titanium Dioxide as good as Zinc Oxide for sunscreen?
I was looking for sunscreens containing zinc oxide, but I wound up finding this "Neutrogena Sensitive Skin Sunblock Lotion" which contains titanium dioxide. I read some reviews say that titanium dioxide does not block UVA as much as zinc oxide does, but another review said that titanium dioxide is actually better. Any ideas on this?

I've never tried zinc oxide, but vaseline works great!!! just apply a generous amount, use your fingers to rub it, generally the chapped parts will rub off easily... than apply chapstick/vaseline for the next few days and watch it get all smooth again.

Not to mention, vaseline is readily available almost anywhere... supermarket, 99cent stores, thrifty marts, etc...

Zinc Oxide?
I am PALE as a ghost! I stay away from the sun because I have a scar. (I heard that the scars would stay with you forever if you get a tan AND I get dizzy from the heat!) I have TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury).

Someone suggested to apply "zinc oxide" over my scar. I have ONE scar that bothers me! It's right on my face. It connects my eyebrows. (I have others but it doesn't bother me as much)

How can I apply this to my face? Dab it on with my finger? Use Quality-tip; Q-tip for short? Do I apply it RIGHT on my scar or around it (but if I apply around it, wouldn't it look funny if I ONLY NOT get tanned in that section, right?)?

How, how, how?!?! I realize that I sound like a VAIN MO-FO!!

HELP!
I heard that SURFERS use Zinc Oxide on their nose - I forgot to include this bit of info before.

you could use zinc oxide, just dab it on with your finger over the scar. it is white, so you will be going outside with white stuff on your forehead ... it does not rub in.
I would just buy some of the new SPF 50 or 70 sunscreen. make sure you have some that protects against UVA & UVB rays. many of them also have some zinc oxide in them, or other products that are newer that will protect your skin & not be totally opaque & solid white.

to help get rid of your scar you can try a product called mederma - it will help your scar fade a bit.
good luck.

best absorption
I am a fond believer in vitamins and supplements and a fond disbeliever in pharmaceutical drugs. To that extent I have been on a regiment of supplements to assist in quality of life.
First I have been taking Vitamin E for 38 years and only recently tried other antioxidants like Lycopene and Acai with poor results but after the first day back on E was revived. Although now I am attempting Acai again with better results. Is Vitamin E the answer for my antioxidant needs?
My hips are deteriorating so taking Glucousamine, Calcium and MSM, plus Zinc as I am 54 yrs old. Also B3 for good circulation as my Cholesterol was a bit high.
I have read different absorption strategies from people I don't think I could rely on. My doctor is even a bit bland on the topic.
WHat I have heard so far is:
Don't mix water-soluble with fat soluble, yet take E and B's in the morning.
Take E with milk (I don't drink milk).
Take Zinc with Vitamin B6 (Is zinc water soluble and how much is destroyed by the stomach acid?).
Which ones should I be taking twice a day?
Which counter each other?
Zinc should be taken as far from a meal as possible for best absorption but should it?
I hope you can answer these questions for me.

You are asking about antibiotics (cephalosporins, bacitracin, polymyxin B) and antimycotics (griseofulvin). Actually, any germ can develop resistance to any antibiotic treatment. Plus, cephalosporins is a group of antibiotics, with 4 generations and each generation differs in efficacy against bacteria.

is this the bacitracin polymycin or the neomycin? or both?
at any rate, they are both ok for ocular infections for the cornea and conjunctiva :) as long as it was given by ophthalmologist.

It is a strong, broad spectrum topical antibiotic ointment. It will most likely clear up your external infection on the earlobe, although you will likely have to use your earring post to shove a bit through the piercing hole to help clear up anything inside that tube. If you have had the ointment for a long time, it may not be as effective as when it was "fresh" as a few medicines lose potency over time. But it will most likely "do the trick". I would take out my earring. Wipe it off with an alcohol prep pad (found in any drug store in boxes of 100 for about $2. Using the earring post as a syringe, work a little of the alcohol from the pad into the hole. Wipe off both the front and back of your earlobe with a clean prep pad. Squeeze a little of the ointment onto the earring post, and work it in and out of the piercing. Then remove the earring and leave it out for a day or so while keeping ointment on the exterior of both the front and back of the earlobe. In a couple of days it should be feeling fine. I have very sensitive ears and typically wear only gold or silver earrings, mostly silver. Silver is used in certain hospital procedures because it has a known anti-bacterial property.

A zinc oxide or other sunscreen recommended by the Envioronmental Working Group that goes on clear ?
I tried a recommended Zinc Oxide product from Lavera and it makes me as white as a ghost even after a lot of rubbing in, and it also kind of sticks to my arm hairs. The convenience of this is a far cry from the clear sprays which I used to use (which are not recommeneded, the ones I used anyway). I am hoping to find an EWG recommended sunscreen that goes on as clear as possible.

Okay, I had the same problem trying to find a clear zinc oxide product. Solar Sense makes a clear zinc product for the face: http://www.solar-sense.com/carded-jar.shtml

I have tried this and it does rub in clear. It takes a bit of rubbing and then it dries. If your skin is slightly oily like mine, this may be too greasy for you as I have found it to be. It is slightly moisturizing so it can leave a shine sometimes.

I found another product recommended by the EWG -- the store brand, Walgreens Clear Zinc for Face. This is less shiny for me than the Solar Sense and much cheaper ($6.49 for 4 oz. versus $3.29 for 0.5 oz.)

Zinc oxide is really the best thing for your face because it really blocks out UVA rays (just make sure it's at least 6% zinc oxide).

Another product that goes on clear but is quite hard to rub in is Vanicream Sport 35. It's $9.99 for 4 ounces and you have to ask the pharmacy to order it for you. (Or you can go on the company Website and call them to request a sample. http://www.psico.com/products/products_view_options.cfm 1-800-325-8232.) I liked Vanicream as it was non-shiny, but it was just VERY thick and hard to rub in (plus it's a pain having to order it from the pharmacy or from the website). With the Walgreens brand I find I rub it in until it still appears slightly white and then after about 15 minutes the shine and whiteness have disappeared.

Stay away from products with Titanium Dioxide. Even though, like zinc oxide, it is a great UVA blocker, titanium dixodie is even MORE whitening than zinc.

For the rest of your body, I would give up on using zinc. It's just too hard to rub in, especially on areas with hair!

Can zinc oxide be used to treat jock itch?
I've been having an itch around the area of my groin and it's very irritating. To my knowladge, I'm almost positive that it's a jock itch - can anyone verify and can I use zinc oxide to treat it?

Buy a tube of Lotrimin at your local drugstore. Your skin will absorb it and it won't leave a mess like zinc oxide!

Are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide safe when ingested via toothpaste?
While brushing my teeth earlier, I accidentally swallowed some of my toothpaste before I could spit and rinse. The toothpaste is organic and contains zinc oxide powder and titanium dioxide powder. While I am certain it's not harmful, I'm just curious, since it's in a toothpaste.

Simple recipe for homemade sunscreen with zinc oxide?
I am looking for a sunscreen. I just bought a zinc oxide ointment (40%) from store. It is too white and too thick to apply to face, I wonder if there is a simple recipe to mix with something else (olive oil?) so I can use it as a sunscreen. I am mostly only use to go the swimming pool near my apartment, for less than 30 minute each time, so is there a simple way to make this homemade sunscreen?

Is it too late to form a scab? Should I discontinue use of antibiotic ointment?
Okay, so about 1 week ago, I preformed salabrasion on a tattoo of mine. I rubbed the tattoo until it got red/slightly bloody. I intended on leaving it alone to heal, but when my fiance came home and saw what i had done to myself (lol) he wasn't pleased, at ALL and demanded we go out to get bandaids and ointments. Since then, I have been applying Triple Antibiotic Ointment, which contains bacitracin zinc, neomycin sulfate, and polymyxin b sulfate.
Here is my problem- I *believe* that in order for the tattoo to lighten or "be removed", it has to form a scab, and then ink will come out in the scab.. However, after one week, I still haven't formed a scab on the inked area. I had some slight scabbing around the area (I had a red ring surrounding the area for a couple days and is still kind of there but less drastic) but none on the actual inky part of the skin. . the skin around it looks kind of raw and it appears as though the pores/hair follicles in the area are more visible than usual. Is it too late for the wound to scab? Should I discontinue the use of the ointment? I would hate to think I did all this for nothing and will be back at square one the next time I attempt this.. I had already planned on doing this multiple times until I was happy with the results, but did I ruin the chances of removing ink this time around(via scabbing) by using the ointment?
How do I get the area to scab??

Use of antibiotic ointment is part of the salabrasioi process when it is done correctly. You need to leave a gauze bandage with antibiotic ointment on the area for three days after you do the salabrasion. Then you remove the dressing, cover the skin with salt, and do another antibiotic dressing for another three days. After the second three days you remove the gauze dressing and the skin will appear leathery and rough. The dead skin will begin to separate from the healthy skin underneath it within five days pulling the tattoo away with it, and the color will naturally leave the tattoo. It doesn't have anything to do with scabs. Before you attempt something like this you need to be very sure of the process and to take precautions to avoid infection. Your fiance had the right idea.

Can a skin mole be removed using bloodroot?
I have heard that a skin mole can be removed by using blood root paste. I am aware of several 'black salves' that contain blood root and zinc chloride. Zinc Chloride has not been easy to come by however, if one has the blood root herb , is there a way it can be prepared to safely remove skin moles?

I am not sure about that but I had 2 moles on my face that kept itching.... good size ones to. A plastic surgeon put me to sleep and there was no pain what so ever even afterwards. They are gone and you can't even tell they were there. # days ago I had 3 large sunspots removed from arms. The doctor froze them they swelled into big blisters and within 24 hrs they were gone. I would go have them removed because I look at it this way if its not suppose to be there then get it off!
