My skin is getting worse
I have been on doxy for about a month now and my skin it getting so much worse. I only used to get them on my jaw and a little on my checks, now they are all around my month, forehead and chest. My friend told me your skin gets worse before it gets better.. Is this true?

I I've been taking Doxy. for years to keep absesses ay bay.When I went to get it refilled this month the
price jumped so high I didn't even refill it.It went from 3.93 to 150.00. Why? Druggest said he has a hard time getting it. All the drug stores I called even Wal Mart said the same thing.Not good.

Weight Gain
I have gained 8 pounds from taking this medicine for malaria prevention. It is all in my abdomen area. I am extremely fit, work out daily and eat clean daily. I have consistently weighed the same about for the last 3 years. The weight gain is all in my stomach area. I have increased my exercise and decreased my calories, have been off the meds for 6 days, and nothing has changed. How long will it take for this extra weight to leave? I can't stand it...

Review in answer to a couple of different questions
I was taking Doxycycline as a back up antibiotic to the meds I was given for a chlamydia infection.

I had been taking it for a couple of days with no problems, and then one evening I took it with a little bit of water after dinner and then went straight to bed. I woke up with a sharp pain in my chest which hurt more every time I tried to swallow - anything from food and water, to just normal reflexive swallowing.

I couldn't think where it had come from and felt I'd maybe injured something while at the gym the day before. I left it for a couple of days but it wouldn't go away and it actually felt like it was getting worse.

I finally looked up online info on Doxycycline and found it does indeed cause damage to the esophagus if not taken correctly:

I then spoke to the doctor who prescribed it and he told me I was talking rubbish and that Doxycycline caused nothing of the sort.

I consulted another physician on the drug and he confirmed that it is highly corrosive to the lining of the esophagus if not swallowed with plenty of water and with the patient remaining upright after ingesting the pill, for at least 30minutes.

Basically what happens is that the pill sticks to the lining of your esophagus if not taken with enough water, or if you lie down after taking it. With time, the capsule dissolves exposing the esophagus to the Doxycycline. If left, for a even a couple of hours (ie overnight), it causes ulcers and lesions to occur wherever the chemical has come in contact with the esophagus. The clinical term is Pill-induced Esophagitis.

It is extremely painful especially when swallowing (anything - food, fluids, even saliva) and causes major chest pain and shortness of breath when doing so. This can last up to 10 days and longer - even if you have stopped the drug.

The only things I found helped, were drinking soups and smoothies (avoiding fruits with skins and small pips that could irritate the ulcers), finishing this off with sips of water to cleanse the esophagus, then drinking 1-2 teaspons of pure avocado oil (avocados are rich in Omega's which help to heal tissue, as well as Vitamin E which is known to aid in tissue repair too. It also coats the esophagus, since it is an oil, which seems to provide some relief too).

If it gets really really bad (like it did for me) speak to your doc and see if he can get you on Tramadol or Tramacet - it's quite a strong painkiller (schedule 5) but it seems to be one of the few that will relieve this kind of pain. Keep in mind that the esophagus is still very very sensitive even if you can't feel anything going down when on these painkillers - rather play it safe and stick to softer foods as you might cause further damage if you just carry on with a normal diet.

It does eventually heal, it just takes a long time.

I was taking Doxycycline for a few days & got a rash
I was taking 100MG tablets twice a day for about three days. After the 3rd day, I noticed a bumpy rash starting to come up on my legs and it would get itchy and hot then disappear. The next day it started on my arms and it does the same thing. I stopped taking the medicine & I'm waiting to see if the rash will go away after the medicine leaves my body but I wanted to know if this is normal & if it will go away on its own or will I have to go on some other medicine just to get rid of the rash. I don't have swelling of the face, throat, or tongue & my chest does not hurt or feel tight. My skin isn't peeling or blistering but when the rash comes up, the affected area is a little itchy & it's warm.

Doxycycline for ACNE.
I started taking Vibramycin 100mg i don't have a doctor.Its been 2 1/2 weeks and my skin actually clearing up. My question is i think i'm getting these small red tiny red bumps they are itchy on my arms mostly 4-5 bumps. should i be worried.I DONT HAVE A DOCTOR CANT AFFORD ONE.

When/What should I eat when taking Doxycycline Hyclate?
I was given a prescription of doxycycline hyclate yesterday for acne, and I'm a little uncertain of what I should eat and when I should do it. My doctor said something about eating yogurt, but the pill bottle sort of seems to say I shouldn't. Has anyone taken doxycycline for acne, and if so, did it work, and when did you find was the best time of day to take it?

You're probably reading something like this on the label:

"Doxycycline is best taken on an empty stomach with a full glass of water (8 ounces or 240 milliliters), 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. Some manufacturers state it can be taken with food or milk if you develop an upset stomach, however doxycycline might be less effective if taken with food or milk (or other products high in calcium). Do not lie down for 30 minutes after taking this medication."

The reason that your doctor recommended yogurt is because antibiotics are more like grenades than sniper rifles. They kill the good bacteria that help your body digest food, as well as the bad bacteria that are harming you. Without any bacteria in your system, you become susceptible to a number of problems, but all of these can be avoided by simply replacing the good bacteria by eating food with live cultures, like yogurt. (check the label on the yogurt package, not all yogurts have live cultures.)

This medication is most effective if taken on an empty stomach. If it gives you a stomach ache, or makes you feel like you are going to throw up, eat a slice of bread or a couple crackers.

Take the Yogurt halfway between doses.

I was prescribed this medication 19 days ago to treat my acne. I began taking it as directed and yesterday on the 29th of July 2012 I woke up with unexplained chest pain. This pain was located just above where my heart is...in the middle of your chest slightly to the left. I am studying to be a nurse and am in my third year of school so I immediately took my pulse, blood pressure, and listened to my heart, major arteries, and bowel sounds. At first I thought that it might be indigestion or something, but I did not eat anything that would disagree with me. I was not in the sun for too long nor was i dehydrated, nor did I lift anything too heavy or perform any strenuous activities. Anyway, even if I had that shouldn't make a difference because I am 19 years old and am as healthy as a horse. My mom started asking around about it and one of her friends says that her brother was on this medication (it was the exact same one she was sure and it was the ONLY medication he was on) and he was a SUPER healthy 21 year old man who almost DIED and was in the hospital for two weeks and had to have MAJOR surgery performed on his liver, all because of this drug - which he was also taking to treat acne. I have been doing some research and some sights say that if you are on this medication for long-term use then it is recommended to have regular liver function tests. This leads me to believe that this medication is dangerous. I immediately got rid of the pills and plan on NEVER taking them again. I am worried now that I may have permanent damage somewhere that I do not know about because of this drug. Your heart and your liver?....you can't live without those. Please take my story into consideration before taking any more Doxycycline Hyclate. This is serious. When I took my vitals I had an increased heart rate while at rest. That is not normal for me. I took my vitals again twice today and they were all spot on, but that is not to say that something is still a problem or could return again in the future. You only get one body, one chance, your health is ALWAYS most important above all other concerns.

This message is not intended to scare you, just to let you know about what happened to me so it doesn't happen to others, I wish someone had told me about this before I started taking it. It has caused me much unnecessary and avoidable worry.

I was prescribed DOXYCYCLINE HYCLATE and the bottle says take 1 capsule by mouth twice daily for ten days ... It doesn't say how far apart i should take the doses . Does anyone know when i should take them ?

Acne is a difficult problem to get rid if, what works for me make make you worse...so its impossible to say if it will work for you. Just give it a fair trial (say 3 months) and if it does not work try something else.

Call your doctor and tell him the reaction you are having. Rash on the hands can be a rash in the throat next time, which is a form of hives, and dangerous. It will develop into anaphylactic shock, and you can die from it, as the throat closes shut throughout the air tubes. Always tell the doctor if you are having any kind of reaction to a medicine. Some will have a direct reaction such as anaphylaxis, or it can cause a sensitivity to lots of things which may be more harmless. But you can't be expected to know what those are, you aren't a doctor. Besides, you've already paid him your money, get your money's worth!

I am fully aware it is described to treat mild to severe acne, so please let me know your thoughts.

I have a yeast infection & I want to take oral medication instead of vaginal medicine/suppositories.

antibiotics CAUSE yeast infections. NO the doxycycline will only make your yeast infection worse. antibiotics frequently cause yeast infections because in addition to killing the bacteria that is making you ill, it also kills your normal bacteria that keep the yeast under control in your vagina. Yeast is a fungus, not a bacteria, and it normally exists in the vagina without trouble, but an imbalance that kills off the normal bacteria that also exists in there, allows the yeast to over grow.
Sorry, but you have to treat yeast with an antifungal, not an antibiotic.

I got bit by a wood tick my doctor said. I got it out and the doctor said there was ntohign left of the tick in me. But he gave me this medicine just in case to prevent any disease including lyme disease from coming just in case. he said im fine but just to be sure. Im taking one tablet a day for three days. Its gonna work right?
my doctor said deer ticks are the only ticks that carry lyme disease and the deer ticks are the size of a pinhead. Mine was almost hlaf the size of my index nail

Doxycycline has not been proven to be particularly effective at treating the basterium reposponsible for lyme disease. And if antibiotics are being used to treat Lyme disease the minimum time period for treatment usually extends to weeks, and usually months. Many times patients take the medicine for years.

If you did not develop a bulls-eye rash around the tick bite, you probably have little to worry concerning Lyme disease. Just keep an eye out for changes in your health, but don't get paranoid.

Just a note that the above statement is completely false. Only around 30-50% of people bitten by a tick with Lyme get a bull's eye rash . . . take it from someone who never had a rash and didn't even know I was bitten by a tick. Now it looks like I've had Lyme for more than a year and it's a lot harder to get rid of once it's been in your system for so long.

I'm with Joe!! I've suffered for YEARS! I was told that I had Fibromyalgia, then hypothyroidism, meds for both failed me because I had NEITHER. I recently took a Lymes test and came back positive for not one, but three tests!! My doc had never seen this before. While I've never been allergic to anything in my life, I've suffered with Doxy! Took for 3 1/2 weeks before I couldn't take it any more. My skin is so sensitive that I can't go out in the daytime. I live in the middle of Michigan, not some warm tropical place. Even if I'm not in the sun, the heat will effect me to the point where I can't wear shoes. I'm 100% Greek, haven't burned since I was a kid (and that was a while ago). I never knew that I'd been bitten, no bulls eye, nothing. Good luck, I hope you feel better. All I can say is that Doxy is wicked stuff people, be careful!

Having a weak stomach shouldn't decide whether you have a problem with Doxy, as it is specific to the antibiotic. You could just try one and see if you handle it ok. If is doesn't say to take on an empty stomach, then be sure to take it after eating.

I am in the same situation you are in. About a month and a half ago I found out I had chlamydia too and my doctor prescribed me the one day dose of azithromycin, but after i took it i still had a lot of abdominal and pelvic pain. I called my doctor, had to wait a month for another check-up, and found out I still had it. So now I'm on the doxycycline for a week to see if this will help get rid of it. call your doctor and schedule an appointment to make sure it is all cleared up.

Your best (and safest) bet would be to ask a pharmacist if there are any interactions listed between the drugs you're wanting to take. Doctors and pharmacists both have access to a database of drug and supplement interactions and they can tell you quickly if you can safely take them together or not.... anyone here will just have a best guess from searching on the internet (which isn't always accurate, as we all know) ;-)
If the same doctor prescribed both, I would hope they checked their database to verify that they wouldn't interact, but it's better to be safe than sorry. Good luck!

Rosacea sufferers advise?
I suffer from Rosacea, my face is always red, soar and looks awful. People are forever asking me if I have a sunburn, but it is worse than that. I have pimple like soars, blistering, redness on cheeks forehead chin & nose. I am aware of the triggers: hot & cold weather, hot & cold beverages, alcohol, coffee, caffeine, chocolate. I live in a cold winter climate, we do get hot in the summer so that is unavoidable, I am out side with kids lots working on the farm, so I can't stay inside all the time, I do drink coffee, I have very little alcohol and do have caffeine and some chocolate. I have tried the medicated creams/gels and they don't work really well - but that was a few yea, I have been taking a medication called Apo-Doxy 100mg Doxycycline Hyclate 100 mg. This does work, but I wondered if there were any new developments in fighting Rosacea...do you have any tips or advice if so please let me know. Thank you.

Unfortunately, the only way to help it is to get an effective medicine. Personally hide the redness I use a good cover up and I always make sure to stay moisturized. Talk to your dermatologist about what you can do. It sounds like you are very unhappy about it. Good luck.

Cephalexin for acne treatmet
I have been taking Cephalexin for acne treatment for three weeks now. My skin is worse than before the cephalexin. I am not having allergic reactions my face just started to break out. I have had acne problems in the past. Is it normal for acne to get worse before it gets better with Cephalexin? And if so, when will it improve?

Was on Doxycycline for 5 months- worked amazing but went off of it because of sun sensativity.

Went back on doxycycline for 3 1/2 months and it was not as effective and made my hands RED. They still are to this day (very annoying).

Been off doxycycline since Feburary 1, 2012 and three weeks ago my doctor prescribed me Cephalexin 500mg twice a day.

I've been using it for a month now and am not seeing totally impressive results. I also am using a 10% benzoyl peroxide wash prescribed to me and an astringent/lotion stuff that smells weird. I take the doxycycline twice a day if this helps? I am thinking of going on accutane if this doesn't work.. I just need to know if it will just take time.

These medications make your skin worse the first two to eight weeks as they are forcing the acne from under your skin to the surface. Then again take about 4 to 6 months to really see an improvement and then you have to deal with the dry skin they produce. So you try to use a mosturizer than doesn't aggravate the skin such as Nivea, etc. you will see the difference but you just have to be patient. Accutane basically is the same except that you take the pill instead of getting the creams, gels. I myself prefer Accutane also has side effects (birth defects two years after use if you get pregnant) dry skin but I always thought it worked faster. My skin cleared up in six weeks with Accutane. How long does it take for doxycycline to relieve symptoms of dysuria?
I was given doxycycline by my doctor 5 days ago (prior to having lab work done to test for std's) and i have been taking it but the pain is still killing me. Should it be working already or does it take a while? I thought bacteria was suppose to die after 48 hrs of treatment.

I am still waiting for the lab work to come back so i do not know what is wrong.

did they diagnose you with a UTI? doxycycline is used for bacterial infections in the bladder. They usually relieve symptoms within the day of taking them. I would call the doctor as soon as possible, because it is most likely something else...

Doxycycline?
I recently started taking the prescription doxycycline for my skin and it makes me really nauseous in the mornings after I take it. I always just take it with water and usually eat breakfast pretty soon after even though I don't feel like eating because I am so sick. Any ideas on how I can prevent this because it really helps my skin and I don't want to stop taking it. Thanks!

HI! im also taking doxycycline it'll be one year in sept && it does work extremely well. i get nauseous if i take it on an empty stomach too. i eat about 10 mins B4 i take it. this way i dont get nauseous. oh && u shouldnt eat n e dairy products bcuz it will cuz otherwise ur body wont absorb enough medication. so wait 2 hours b4 or 1 hour after if u do eat dairy products.

Yes you can start it now, your period doesnt interfer with the action of the antibiotic.

But bear in mind if your on the pill, that it will interfer with your contraception, so use condoms.

How long does it take for Doxycycline to stop making me feel nauseous?
I am taking a new antibiotic, Doxycycline, for my acne. However, I seem to be getting nauseous every day. Will I ever get used to this and stop feeling it? Or does it get worse?
What I have been doing is taking my pill with a full glass of water, and then eating a chewy bar. Am I doing something wrong?

Doxycycline is notorious for causing nausea, which is why it is extremely important to take it with food of some kind. You don't have to eat an entire meal, just a couple of crackers should do the trick. I would advise you eat something first, then take your doxycycline afterwards. Hope this helps.

Pain in my throat & tonsils. Taking Doxycycline. Please help, soon!?
Approximately 11/05/08 I started having swollen tonsils and a swollen bump or lump under my left tonsil. I called my doctor and he called in a prescription of Doxycycline (100 mg. 2 pills per day - 7 days). I started taking the Doxy and my tonsils weren't swollen anymore in about 4 days. However, the bump under my tonsil continued to stay there and my throat continues to hurt. After my 7 days of medicine, I still felt bad so I went to the doctor in person. He said that the Doxy probably didn't clear up the infection in my tonsils so he prescribed it again for another 7 days. Tomorrow will be my last day of this cycle of Doxycycline and I still have pain in my tonsils and throat along with this bump in the back under my tonsil. I have been dipping Copenhagen a lot lately, but I quit 2 days ago. Does anyone know what this is? Do I have strep throat and this Doxycycline is just the wrong prescription to be taking? Please give me some advice and answers....soon! Thanks

It takes a really long time actually. Some doctors will prescribe it for longer than a month! And it will make your teeth turn yellow and sometimes brown. I didn't like it a all. Also, your skin turns really sensitive to the sun. I prefer the topical antibiotics better. It is just a solution that you apply once a day. Good luck! I know its hard living with acne :(

My son is on Vibramycin doxycycline calcium 7 mls every 12 hours. He has been on this medication since Wednesday night, the first 7ml dose was given then. I also have him on the Vibramycin and 3tsp of the Children's Ibuprofen 100. But he is still spiking a fever of 102.8 or higher, he has now developed a running nose which he did not have the before, Wednesday the doctor stated that his lungs were clear, ears were fine, but I am getting a little worried because I can only keep his fever down for 8 hours which is the time frame for the Motrin. Also do I need to Refrigerate the Vibramycin Doxycycline calcium or not. I am getting a little concern with his fever still spiking after the Children's Ibuprofen 100 wears off. Also before his fever spikes up to 102.8 or higher he states he is tired and sleepy. He gets really weak, latharjeck and complains of a headache, I am concerned.

I would take him to the ER because of the fever. Your doctor should either change his medication or do some more testing because this is too long to be having a high temperature which is very dangerous.

Can I combine Doxycycline and Malarone?
I am going to southeast asia in a couple of weeks and just bought malarone to prevent malaria. i got only 30 doses and they are quite pricey. I am reading that doxycycline is a lot cheaper, so i was wondering if i could combine the two drugs (and start doxy once i am done with the malarone pills). Would there be any reactions or any gap in the protection if i start taking doxy once i finish the malarone pills?

I got a prescription for doxycycline (anti-malaria), and it says "substitution permitted" What does that mean?
I'm not too familiar with going to the pharmacy. I must not have went in 15 years, so please help me understand the prescription. I think doxycycline is the best for me, but I'm thinking there might be occasional situations in which other malaria drugs will be better. So since the prescription says "substitutions permitted" does that mean the pharmacist can give me other anti-malaria drugs like Lariam on request?

What if Azithromycin & Doxycycline Don't Work?
About 6 weeks ago, I picked up chlamydia from my girlfriend. As this is my first (and hopefully last) experience with an STD, I'm a bit of a novice as far as treatment is concerned. 3 weeks ago I went to see my primary care doctor (about a week after symptoms began) complaining of a slight itchy/burning sensation during urination. I did not have any discharge at all. I was tested and came back positive for chlamydia. Here is what transired after this:

- 1 day before test results, doctor prescribed 400 mg of Suprax
- The day the test results confirmed I had chlamydia and not gonorrhea, I was given 1500 mg of azithromycin. I took 1 gram the first day, and 500 mg the 2nd day.
- 5 days later I still had symptoms, so I saw a urologist. He ran another test (which subsequently came back positive for chlamydia), and prescribed 100 mg of Doxycycline twice per day, for 14 days.

I am now on day 12 of the Doxy, and I still have symptoms. My last pill will be Tuesday morning, and I'm scheduled for another test on Thursday. And now for the questions:

Is it likely at this point that the Doxycycline has not worked? If so, is it worth asking for a different antibiotic rather than wait 5-7 days for test results to come back and not be on meds during this time? If so, what medication is most appropriate assuming azithromycin and doxycycline did not work?

Thanks for the feedback. Just to clarify, I have not had sex with anyone while being treated, or since picking up the infection. So, re-infection can't be the reason. Any idea how long the symptoms can linger on for? Also, if the test is negative but I still have symptoms, can I have sex without risking re-infecting my girlfriend (she has been treated as well)?

Treatment for chlamydia is usually extremely effective. Have you had sex with someone during your antibiotic course? Reinfection is a possibility. In some cases chlamydia has been found to be resistant to the usual drugs. If this were the case an alternative drug is levofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone.

You probably don't have it any more, since symptoms can linger because of irritation. Get the re-test and see if you still have it, then either consider reinfection or switch antibiotics.

Does doxycycline cure or just prevent acne?
I've just started taking doxycycline 50mg for moderate-severe acne and I am wondering what happens when the six months is up? does it totally cure acne for good or does it just cure it for as long as you stay on doxy?
Also, for yous in the know, should I ask my doctor to move up to 100mg a day? I have did a lot of researching on doxy and anyone with any sort of success seems to be on either 100/200mg daily, I think my doctor put me on 50mg with a "we'll see how it goes" attitude but for yous who had acne know all too well, I want results as fast as possible! thanks :)

According to the Chinese face map, different parts of the face are linked to different organs. I haven't heard of doxycycline before, but if your doctor has a "we'll see how it goes" sort of attitude, that probably means that it's a dangerous medicine. I wrote an article about accutane and benzoyl peroxide if you care to read about it. It's exposing pharmaceutical companies and showing the benefits of white tea on acne. If you have more acne on certain parts of your face than others, it's your face telling you which organs are in distress. White tea is the better cure for acne. what are the side effects of taking allopurinol like zyloric to reduce uric acid in blood and doxycycline?
i was having pain in my testicles.doctor diagnosed maybe due to bacteril infection and prescribed doxycycline-100m.g for 14 days with pain killer .also i was taking zyloric for reducing my uric acid levels in blood.does this cause any fungal infection of skin asi experienced a small rash on my thigh and neck,chest which the doctor identified as sebbahoric dermatitis.

Doxycycline and allopurinol both can cause minor rashes and, rarely, exfoliative dermatitis. Exfoliative dermatitis and seborrheic dermatitis can look similar--producing red, scaly patches of skin. In some cases, exfoliative dermatitis can be *caused* by underlying seborrheic dermatitis.

Seborrheic dermatitis doesn't affect the chest as often (except right down the center sometimes). Does the rash itch? Seborrheic dermatitis usually doesn't itch very much, while exfoliative dermatitis does. Also, do you have any systemic symptoms? Exfoliative dermatitis often is associated with fevers, chills, and/or generalized weakness.

The distinction is important because the treatments for the two conditions are different (although, as I mentioned earlier, it is possible to have both). If your rash is minor, you may not require any treatment at all (just discontinue the doxycycline or wait out the 14-day course).

i have pretty bad acne and have been on doxycycline for two weeks and my acne has gotten so much worse and it just keeps getting worse and my skin is getting pretty dry. is this normal in the first few weeks? will it get better after it gets worse?

usually this is the case
with almost all acne treatments that you get prescribed by a dermatologist you get an initial crazy outbreak and it seems like your complexion is getting worse not better. I would say that you should give it a little more than a month
and if by then things haven't done a 180, then go see your dermatologist again.

Weight gain from acne drug? Is this possible?
Around 3 month ago I started taking Doxycycline Hyclate for acne after many trial and error tests with creams. In the past I've maintained a low weight (98 pounds and I'm 5'4" and a teenager) with little to no excersize. I started excersizing about an hour for track (around a month before getting my medication) and lost weight. Recently I'd noticed my jeans feeling snugger and developing a fleshy stomach, and I thought I'd maybe gotten bloating (from my insane salt intake and my period), but it didn't go away! I weighed myself today and have gained 15 pounds. I am becoming depressed by the minute. I have been eating maybe 200 calories more, but I've been running even more for PE, so I thought it wouldn't do anything.

Sorry about the long story! But is it possible that the drug is making gain weight? The fat I've noticed feels like water weight but I've been this way for a month.

I saw this on a site about this drug:
Doxy cleared up my infection almost immediately.
Negative side effects I am experiencing are:
- weight gain (stomach bloating) no amount of exercise is helping
- sleep irregularity
- nausea
- stomach/heart burn
- lethargic muscle movement
- trouble concentrating
- light headedness

overall the drug is working and I'll hang on until the course finishes. Symptoms are tolerable I suppose, except the weight gain.
Thank you "Babe", you're very kind to include advice! I'm actually stopping the pills because of the fact that I've gott probably 3x MORE acne than before and I was using this product so I could advance to a stronger one, so it was a stepping stone of some sort.

It looks like you have answered your own question. YES! Doxy will cause weight gain.

Cut back on your calories; maintain your running schedule. You might also add to the run with a little weight resistance work out to tone up your muscles.

Cut your salt intake and increase your salads and vegetables. Drink your eight glasses of water to stay hydrated and flushed.

Keep up the water and diet changes after your course of Doxy is completed. Perhaps you won't ever need it again.

Contact your doctor and let him/her know you are having these side effects and plan to quit taking it. It is possible that there is a better medication than the Doxy.

When will the use of doxycycline stop treating acne?
I have been on doxycyline for 9 weeks. It was working great for my acne, but after the 6/7 week my acne started to show again (I was 5 hours late on one of my doses). I started taking 400 mg a day instead of 200, it is still not working. I did this without consulting with my doctor. This is because I don't have an appointment with him for another month. My brother is prescribed to 500 mg of tetracycline for the same reason, we switch medications so I could see if my body has just became immune to doxy. Okay, here's the question(s): I know doxy is derived from tetracycline, but is there a difference? Do both medications do the same thing to the bacteria? If so, will tetracycline work for me since doxycycline stopped? Also, how long does the average person take to become immune to these products?
Please respond if you have an answer to one or more of the many questions I've posted.

It is really dangerous to take extra dose of doxycycline as it causes adverse reactions like stomach upset,hypersensitivity,liver damage.the maximum recommended dose is 200mg/day.For acne ,the efficacy seems to be not more than 12 weeks,so a changeover in drug therapy is needed after consultation with GP.Doxycycline is same as tetracycline but have some additional advantage like better absorption and less interference with food.
All antibiotics ,overuse and also underuse can also lead to resistence over time.Microorganisms become resistant to particular antibiotic over years.
Also do not take isotretein(accutane) with doxycycline as it raises intracranial hypertension.
Tetracyclines may be useful in acne for a particular period of time and consult your doctor if it doesnt works and dont increase your dose.if doxycycline doesnt work same will be the effect of tetracycline
