Are dental shots life-threatening?
I heard about people dying from using topical lidocaine anesthetic after a laser hair removal procedure. What about the lidocaine in dental shots? Is it dangerous too?

I am aware that some shots have epinephrine (adrenaline) in them and so I am requesting that my shot contains no epinephrine when I have my tooth extracted Tuesday, as I have a cardiac arrhythmia.

But I am afraid of having the toxic reaction associated with lidocaine, carbocaine, etc.

Are these drugs safe???? Am I risking my life when my dentist numbs me up?

Thannk you for any input.... :(

nothing to get worry about local anesthesic injection.lignocaine is safe and toxic reactions normally wont occur.

however toxicity is possible when the dosage goes excess.(your dentist will be knowing about this)

its true a small number of people has allergy to local anesthesia.(check whether you are allergic to local anesthesia)

hundreds, thousands of people get local anesthesia daily throughout the world before dental procedures without much problems.

regarding your cardiac problem, get a fitness certificate from cardiologist for undergoing dental therapy.

INFORM YOUR DENTIST ABOUT THE CARDIAC ARRYTHMIA YOU HAVE BEFORE HE STARTS THE PROCEDURE.

the adrenaline in local anesthesia is very low.no need to fear regarding this.
plain local anesthesia without adreanline are also available and can be used for you.

good luck

what are lincomycin hydrochloride and lidocaine hydrochloride gel use for?

Reply
Lincomycin hydrochloride is mainly used for fighting respiratory tract and soft tissue infections.

there's another type: It is indicated for the infections due to Staphylococcus,Streptococcus Pneumococcus and anaerobes. It may cause enteritis of pseudo-menbrane after prolonged administration. Patients with hepatic insufficiency should use prudently.

Lidocaine hydrochloride is used as a pain reliever. Lidocaine (lignocaine) belongs to a group of medicines known as local anaesthetics. Lidocaine acts to block temporarily the pathway of pain impulses along nerve fibres. This relieves or prevents pain in the area where it has been injected. This preparation is injected to provide local anaesthesia for minor procedures, such as dental surgery.

you can check out these websites. it's good. good luck!

Are dental shots (lidocaine, etc) dangerous?
I have to have a third molar removed and I can not have EPINEPHRINE in my shot so they are using Carbocaine instead.

I heard about people DYING from using TOPICAL numbing drugs such as Lidocaine after cosmetics procedures.

Can someone tell me why it is safer to have dental shots INJECTED and not die vs. someone who used it topically, absorbed into their bloodstream and they uh, DIED?
I am aware that the -caine anesthetics are neurotoxins and also can be toxic to the heart if too much is absorbed in the bloodstream.... so I am concerned about having these toxic reactions in the dentist's chair.

Can someone please tell me why it is safe?
Do they use a smaller amount at the dentist than you would get topically? I'm confused..... :(

Thanks so much..

In the cases of people dying after cosmetic procedures... it was the amount of topical numbing drugs that killed them. If I remember correctly... these people were having a procedure done on their legs, where topical numbing was rubbed all over the legs, and then the legs were wrapped in cloth or plastic (can't remember exactly). This massive amount of topical numbing agent caused rapid change in blood pressure. This is what killed them.

There are risks with dental injections... nerve damage, injection directly into the vein... therefore straight to the heart. These risks are very minimal and if administered correctly, are very safe.

Epinephrine?
Will epinephrine make me more aggressive?

Like, say for example that I am really timid in football. If I take epinephrine will it just make me go crazy and be relentless?

Thanks.

I think it's more for getting over hives.

I wouldn't use it for sports.

Use visualization. See yourself in your imagination, from OUTSIDE yourself. See yourself playing sports. Now, see yourself being stronger & more aggressive, when it's necessary. See yourself being applauded by your teammates & your coach yelling, "Great!" at you.

That's better than weird drugs.

Allergy to Caine/Grave's Disease - Need Help Please?
I need to have a root canal done but my physicians are causing me to worry. I have Grave's Disease and an allergy to "caine" drugs. In the past, I have used Citanest (Prilocaine) with no trouble. I have a new medical insurance that is horrible and they are saying that I should not have the procedure unless it is a medical emergency. If so, they are saying not to use a local with epinephrine (could cause Thyroid Storm/Death). The infections that are ongoing from the need for dental work is ridiculous - 7 rounds of antibotics and the pain is exquisite. My questions are this:
1. What local anaestics do not contain epinephrine that are not Lidocaine/Procaine?
2. What are the risks if I do not have the root canal done?
3. Is there any other helpful advice that you can share?

Thank you in advance for answering. I appreciate the advice. If you need any further information, please e-mail through answers. Thanks again.

The grave's disease could be from a deficiency in iodine, causing the goiter. The Thyroid gland needs iodine and the amino acid tyrosine to produce hormones. If you are deficient in either of these, many problems can happen in the body and the thryoid is one of them.

Your allergies could be from nutritional deficiencies as well. The antibiotics are very destructive to the body. If you do not have the nutrients your body needs to create a good immune system, the antibiotics will not work well at all. Antibiotics do no killing of germs, but cause the body to produce more macrophages from particular kinds of white cells in your body. If you are deficient, it's like beating a tired horse to make him walk faster, it's just not going to happen if he's really tired.

Bad teeth are another sign of being very deficient.

If you use fluoride toothpaste, drink fluoridated water, bathe without a shower filter, drink sodas and domestic beer, you are getting enough fluoride to make you iodine deficient. I would check yourself to see if this is the case. It's simple to do. Purchase a small bottle of "tincture of iodine" and rub a patch 2" x 3" on your forearm or on your chest. Note the time of day. You should be able to see the patch after 24 hours. If it goes away in a few hours, you are very deficient.

To help your body get rid of the deficiencies like this, you will need to take about 5 - 6 months of taking iodine supplements to correct the problem. Once you have done this, you may find you will have a more healthy thyroid.

Just so you know, when they put fluoride in the drinking water, many children develop goiters as well as adults. This is a very bad practice that is being done to water supplies.

In regard to your allergies, that can come from many places. Without knowing more about your diet, specific deficiencies, it is difficult to predict what is causing that. I suggest, if you can, locate a Certified Nutritional Therapist to test you and find out what you are deficient in and recommend a diet for you.

Additionally, infections in the mouth can be insidious and cause many problems with various organs in the body because there are neural links from the teeth to body organs. You need to address that issue as well, but usually these types of infections are from a huge mineral deficiency in the body. The American diet is not going to solve that issue for you.

good luck

ENDODONTISTS ONLY: Anesthesia w/o epinephrine?
I have trouble with epinephrine causing my heart to race following injection. I recently had a tooth flare up and I just know I will soon need root canal therapy. I've had several root canals, but I used to be able to tolerate the epinephrine. Now, I'm nervous because I know we can't use the epi this time! Can I actually get numb enough for root canal with just carbocaine? I'm NOT looking forward to this one- I need some reassurance please.

04/12/08
Reply
Yes, you can. You probably want to take a round of antibiotics right before you go for the root canal b/c infection can lessen the anesthesia. They can also put you on nitrous oxide gas which can help. In general, epi should only cause your heart to race when given improperly. This is why it is taught to aspirate during an injection to prevent putting the anesthetic into a vein. When it is injected in vein, the epi makes your heart race. But, they can use Mepivicaine plain. Which works fine, but doesn't last as long so they may give you some more.

What are some possible side effects from the recreational injection of Epinephrine?
Let's say I came into possession of a bunch of ampoules full of Epinephrine, and not knowing what else to do with them, I began injecting them recreationally. Sometimes on their own, but sometimes combined with other substances to see what happens.

Is there any possible ill effect from injecting several ampoules worth of Epinephrine after ingesting a cocktail of nutmeg and Vicodin with the aceto removed through a water distillation process?

Reply
First of all, since you have so much criticism from people who think they are smarter than you by calling you dumb.

Water distillation is when you distill water. That really has nothing to do with removing acetominophen from pill binding.

You could very well die if you use to much. But guess what? You can die from to much of anything! Better stop pooping, eating, and drinking alchohol! Now, my question is are you dumb for asking the question or are the people who call you dumb stupid because they think that only a doctor of 8 or more years can understand epinephrine? I'm sorry to say, but you can only know so much about a single drug. I'm sure you are capable of knowing your body and the drug perfectly fine.

Some of the adverse side effect could come from the combination of the drugs. From the medical articles that I just read through, there is no interaction between epinephrine and hydrocodone (Vicodin). Nutmeg has not been studied very extensively, but I don't see interactions with that either. You are making yourself a guinea pig make sure to post if you suddenly have negative side effects. Don't be daring. Work up from a small dosage.

Know your body, know your mind, know your substance.

Can you become allergic to lidocaine all of a sudden?
I was just perscribed lidocaine and was allergic to it - well - I felt dizzy, nausous, diarra, just icky. I also have this feeling when I go to the dentist. I have been ok with the dentist until 8 years ago when I passed out in the dentist office. And ever since then I am terrified about going to the dentist because of that. Was that a allergic reaction and can you become allergic to lidocaine and the dentist "caine"?
Had lidocaine in a mouthwash - had to swallow it.

You can be allergic to just about anything, but you don't describe the usual allergic reaction. The dentist uses the same local anesthetic the doctors do, except their preps usually contain epinephrine as well- to restrict bleeding and extend the effectiveness. Epinephrine is the "fight or flight" chemical your body produces when you are stressed or frightened, and can cause all sorts of odd feelings- including the gut. To find out if you are truly allergic to it you would need to be specifically tested by an allergist. If you suspect you are, that would be a good thing to do, because allergies to medications that are injected can be quite deadly. They can show up all of a sudden, and can go from one mild to one life threatening reaction without warning. And since lidocaine is such a common local anesthetic, you would certainly need to know and have a medicalert tag to the effect. But what I think is you are dealing with an overstressed body in fear of the dentist, and the epinephrine isn't helping matters any. That's what it really sounds like. Still, get tested and find out for certain. Then if it's safe, you can always ask the dentist for a bit of a sedative first, which will help control the other reactions.

Note- you aren't supposed to swallow the mouthwash. You are supposed to swish in in your mouth and spit it out- not swallow it. You feel slighty icky because you just slightly anesthetized your esophogus, stomach and everything else. While it won't hurt you- it's not intended to be swallowed in much quantity.

Is there a difference between epinephrine and albuterol?
Is albuterol and epinephrine the same thing? I know people abuse epinephrine to lose weight or get a speed like effect, but is it the same as albuterol, if not why do people abuse albuterol then?

No they are not the same thing. Epinephrine is your "fight or flight" hormone. You are thinking of ephedrine (in weight loss products) Albuterol is used for people with asthma or other breathing problems. Epinephrine can help relax your airways and make it easier to breath similarly to albuterol....but they are not the same thing.

Can Topical Lidocaine & Prilocaine Help Sunburn?
Well, title says most, but I got burned pretty bad, and I'm not sure if it will blister or not.. I have some sunburn relief stuff, and it has lidocaine & aloe vera, BUT I don't have it with me, I'm away from home. I found some other stuff here, and it's Lidocaine & Prilocaine, can it help me? How does an injection of epinephrine stop the inflammatory response?
When you are having an allergic reaction or extreme itching after a sunburn or rash, how does epinephrine work to stop it?

I've never given epinephrine for extreme itchiing or sunburn, or even a rash. I've only ever given it for a life threatening allergic reaction, which we call anaphyllaxis. Besides giving the epinephrine, I also gave them injectable diphenhydramine and a steroid. I would imagine it help blocks the histamine receptors, and helps open the lungs up for better respirations. It's been too long since I've went to school to tell you exactly what goes on.

How can I increase Nor epinephrine production in my scalp?
I read that more Nor epinephrine produces more fatty acids and that's just what I need on my scalp.

Is there a product to do this?
David

No. For whatever reason you feel you need fatty acids on your scalp, get some fish oil capsules and apply the oil to your scalp.

Norepinephrine is a hormone and a neurotransmitter and is the precursor of the hormone epinephrine, commonly known as adrenalin. It is released from the medulla of the adrenal glands as a hormone into the blood, but it is also a neurotransmitter in the nervous system where it is released from noradrenergic neurons during synaptic transmission. As a stress hormone, it affects parts of the human brain where attention and responding actions are controlled. Along with epinephrine, this compound affects the fight-or-flight response, activating the sympathetic nervous system to directly increase heart rate, release energy from glucose and glycogen, and increase muscle readiness.

How long will Epinephrine affect Blood test for Bilirubin?
I read that Epinephrine can affect results of bilirubin test -- how long does it take the body to rid itself of epinephrine - so test will not be affected?
steddiecat
08/08/06
Reply
Well, I have never heard of epinephrine interfering with an assay for bilrubin. Its also highly unlikely, epinephrine has a very short 'half life' which means it is broken down and eliminated very quickly after production. For most people, the amount of epinephrine circulating at any given moment is extremely small.

If you are wondering whether being anxious about the test, and that the adrenaline you make may affect the test - no, it doesn't.

I work some of the time in a critical care unit, where we frequently have to run in an infusion of epinephrine and similar drugs, to support heart rate and blood pressure. I have never come across a problem.

Hope this helps.

How long before lidocaine takes effect?
My doctor prescribed me a topical solution (gel) of lidocaine to put on some dog bites on my lower left leg for ease in cleansing the wound. Does anyone know how long before the solution takes effect? I want to clean them at the peak of the lidocaine's deadening properties as they are still very painful. Thanks.

If you apply the solution to the wounds, you should then apply some plastic wrap over it for about 1/2 hour to prevent evaporation and keep the gel on the area. After that, you should have fairly good anesthesia. Equally important is to remember to be gentle when cleaning the wounds. Do not use peroxide or alcohol or betadine as these actually slow down the healing. Better to gently cleanse with warm water and gentle shampoo and then blot dry. Apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment or cream and cover with a non-adherent dressing and change it every other day to promote fastest healing.

How long does lidocaine usually last for?
I got stitches last night and the area still feels numb, but i am not sure if it is because it is just bruised or if it is from the lidocaine.

There are two different kinds of lidocaine, each lasts a different duration.

1) Lidocaine ("Plain")
When injected in or under the skin, prevents sensory nerves from firing by depolarizing sensory nerve axons (the electrical wires of the nerves).
Because plain lidocaine is water soluble, it rapidly flushes away with nearby blood capillaries and veins. The half life for 1 milliliter of plain lidocaine injected below the skin (subcuticular) is about an hour.

2) Lidocaine with epinephrine (LidocaineE)
Works the same as plain lidocaine, except the epinephrine causes all the blood vessels in the area to constrict for hours.
Without blood flow to the area, the lidocaine does not get flushed away.
Depending on the location and the amount injected, LidocaineE can have a half-life up to 6 hours.

If your stitches were placed last night (presumably 24 hours ago), it's not lidocaine causing your numbness.

You probably cut several sensory nerves to the area. Your sensation probably will feel numb for several weeks.

Does getting lidocaine injections into both sides of your thumb hurt?
I have had a splinter stuck under my thumbnail for about 6 months now. I went to the doctor and found out that I have to get two injections of lidocaine in my thumb (one on each side) to numb it so they can lift my nail up to get the splinter out. I want personal experiences about the lidocaine injections and also I want to know about anything else that might hurt while getting the splinter out.

I take it you want the truth here, so yes lidocaine injections do hurt, i had them so i could have stitches and they sting, but you can't let it show cause otherwise you'll look a real dill. It's still better than the alternative, which is to wait till the thumb becomes infected and need more than just the nail removed. It only hurts for a few seconds and then you can't feel anything during the procedure, just some pulling feelings which feel weird not painful. Once the lidocaine wears off it will throb a bit and be quite sore, just have some painkillers and show off your war wounds to your friends. You must be pretty brave anyway to put up with having a splinter under your nail for so long. I hope this has been of help and take care.

Laser Fillings WITHOUT needles? Biolase?
I am a rare case who can not tolerate any of the -caine anesthestic drugs (Lidocaine, Carbocaine, Mepivicane, etc). I am not allergic, just intolerant due to other health conditions. I also can not tolerate the epinephrine in the drugs, but since I can't tolerate the drugs at all, that point doesn't really matter.

I have some invasive cavities that need to be filled. It is a simple filling, it's just that the cavity is close to the nerve.

I have heard that recent advancements in laser dentistry can make it so that hypodermic anesthesia is not required in many cases, but not all.

How far has laser dentistry come so that maybe I can get my fillings without the -caine drugs?

Please help me.

As long as you are not allergic, the dentist can give you the amide type of anesthesiants (lidocaine, etc)
Some like mepivacaine do not contain epinephrine, so that if you have some health conditions where we dont want to give adrenaline (epinephrine), you wont get any. but the anesthesic would not last long. Other anesthesics contain levonordephrine instead of epinephrine to compensate.
So as long as you are not alergic (EXTREMELY rare), the dentist can use mepivacaine plain, which might be the best option. And it does not last long.

As for the laser, it just cut differentely (micro-explosions instead of friction), but if the cavity go near the nerve, you still going to feel to much pain.

How safe is it to use pure lidocaine powder?
I would like to mix some with a cream as a pain relife for my back. The msds sheet that came with it makes me scared to even open it. Is it safe? If i mix 1 gram of lidocaine with 9 grams of cream does that give me a 10% Concentration?

In the proper concentrations, it may be safe enough to use, but I would do some more extensive research into it to find the appropriate dose to be on the safe side.
Wiki says it does help topically with itching, burning, and pain from skin inflammation, but it does have several contraindications:

* Heart block, second or third degree (without pacemaker)
* Severe sinoatrial block (without pacemaker)
* Serious adverse drug reaction to lidocaine or amide local anaesthetics
* Concurrent treatment with quinidine, flecainide, disopyramide, procainamide (Class I antiarrhythmic agents)
* Prior use of Amiodarone hydrochloride
* Hypotension not due to Arrhythmia
* Bradycardia
* Accelerated idioventricular rhythm

Needless to say, I'd be rather careful when dealing with something like this. I would also note that there's a long list under drug interactions below that on Wiki, too.
Yes, if you mix 1 gram of Lidocaine into 9 grams of cream, it would be 10% Lidocaine... but you'd also want to make sure it was mixed really, really well so there aren't any globs of Lidocaine that might cause irritation (or worse). Good luck!

Dental Anesthetic Question?
I took a 10 panel hair test to prove that I was on a prescribed medication and the test came back positive for that medication but it also came back positive for cocaine. I DO NOT DO DRUGS. I have been going to the dentist weekly (sometimes twice a week) from January 2011-last week and getting the following injections (multiple injections each week) of 2%Lidocaine with epinephrine 1:100,000 0.5% Marcaine (Bupivacaine HCl with 1:200,000 epinepheine) and Diflunisal 500mg (NSAID) I have a letter proving the above but the MRO wants proof that these could produce a positive cocaine result. How does a small amount of this epinephrine cause such a rapid and large increase?
Epinephrine rapidly causes the breakdown of glycogen to glucose in skeletal muscle in order to produce increased substrate for ATP production. How does a small amount of this hormone cause such a rapid and large increase?

i really have no idea to this question. I can only think that increasing substrate for atp production would allow more atp to be used....idk. its a wild guess.

Epinephrine injection is used to treat life-threatening allergic reactions caused by insect bites, foods, medications, latex, and other causes. Symptoms of allergic reaction include wheezing, shortness of breath, low blood pressure, hives, itching, swelling, stomach cramps, diarrhea, and loss of bladder control. Epinephrine is in a class of medications called sympathomimetic agents. It works by relaxing the muscles in the airways and tightening the blood vessels.
As a hormone, epinephrine acts on nearly all body tissues. Its actions vary by tissue type and tissue expression of adrenergic receptors. For example, epinephrine causes smooth muscle relaxation in the airways, but causes contraction of the smooth muscle that lines most arterioles.
The adrenergic receptors (or adrenoceptors) are a class of G protein-coupled receptors that are targets of the catecholamines, especially noradrenaline (norepinephrine) and adrenaline (epinephrine). Although dopamine is a catecholamine, its receptors are in a different category.
Many cells possess these receptors, and the binding of an agonist will generally cause a sympathetic response (e.g. the fight-or-flight response). For instance, the heart rate will increase and the pupils will dilate, energy will be mobilized, and blood flow diverted from other non-essential organs to skeletal muscle.

What type of topical painkiller is best for electrolysis?
I am using the lidocaine/prilocaine cream and it is not doing its job that well. I still feel a lot of pain and discomfort during electrolysis (bikini area). I heard EMLA cream is good, but that seems to also be lidocaine/prilocaine based.

Does anyone have any experience with electrolysis and what have you found to be the best painkiller for this particular procedure?

Thanks in advance.

Lidocaine also comes in a gel form that could be an option. I would recommend calling the place where you get the electrolysis done to see what else they suggest as far as trying to numben the areas being treated.

I have a vile/bottle of pure 1% Lidocaine. How do I make a topical cream with this?
I am going to finish up my half leg tattoo. I will be getting drilled on for about 9 hours straight. Is there anyway to turn my pure 1% medical grade lidocaine into a topical cream I can rub on my leg? If so, is it dangerous?
The vile is sterile, I got it from the hospital I work at. It is still capped and has never been drawn from. My question is how I can make a cream.... Not if I should or not.

Why does lidocaine sometimes not work?
I've had this problem a couple times at the dentist (different dentists). The dentist will numb the area he is going to work on with lidocaine (or some other ...caine) and the stuff just wont take. He then uses more and it still doesn't work. He then tries another type of anesthetic and it still doesn't work. I either have to suffer through some pain or wait and come back a different day (it worked the next time I came back). I'm only 29, don't smoke, don't do drugs and rarely drink. It this common or could it be something I'm doing that causes it not to work?

Sometimes the anaesthetic won't take if there is an infection present, or if your nerves aren't exactly where they should be, or even if you're really anxious it can affect the freezing. I don't think it's anything that you did. It just happens. I'll be back. I remember reading about this. I'll see if I can find it. =)

Can ANYONE describe the action of aldosterone, epinephrine and erythropoetin on blood pressure?
Describe the action of aldosterone, epinephrine and erythropoetin on blood pressure. Can you include which of the 4 regulators of blood pressure are effected by each of these and what happens to blood pressure (up or down)? You will get 11points if you can do all of these things!

Aldosterone helps regulate sodium and potassium levels in the body. This helps control blood pressure and the balance of fluids and electrolytes in the blood.

The kidney hormone renin normally stimulates the adrenal glands to release aldosterone. High levels of both renin and aldosterone are normally present when the body is trying to conserve fluid and salt (sodium). When a tumor is present, an aldosterone level will be high while a renin level will be low. Usually a renin activity test is done when the aldosterone level is measured.

Other important functions of the kidneys include blood pressure regulation, and the production of erythropoietin, which controls red blood cell production in the bone marrow.

Urinary system parts and their functions:
two kidneys - a pair of purplish-brown organs located below the ribs toward the middle of the back. Their function is to:

remove liquid waste from the blood in the form of urine.

keep a stable balance of salts and other substances in the blood.

produce erythropoietin, a hormone that aids the formation of red blood cells.

epinephrine
When secreted into the bloodstream, it rapidly prepares the body for action in emergency situations. The hormone boosts the supply of oxygen and glucose to the brain and muscles, while suppressing other non-emergency bodily processes (digestion in particular).

It increases heart rate and stroke volume, dilates the pupils, and constricts arterioles in the skin and gut while dilating arterioles in skeletal muscles. It elevates the blood sugar level by increasing catalysis of glycogen to glucose in the liver, and at the same time begins the breakdown of lipids in fat cells. Like some other stress hormones, epinephrine has a suppressive effect on the immune system.[5]

Although epinephrine does not have any psychoactive effects, stress or arousal also releases norepinephrine in the brain. Norepinephrine has similar actions in the body, but is also psychoactive

Anyone tried Aphthasol (RX) for canker sores (aphthous stomatitis) if so what results did you get?
My doctor prescribed lidocaine 2% for the pain over a year ago. However if this new RX is worth it by shortening the outbreaks I'd be all for it. I regularly get these - one that once a month.
I suffer breakouts more than once a month & the doctor has prescribed 2% lidocaine for the pain.
Appreciate the answer... I'm one of those *over the edge* folk... I get them more than 90% & I actually have chunks missing in my tongue.

I need more than the normal things that do work to a certain extent ... I do the alcohol, peroxide, Benedryl, maylox, baking soda, etc....................

I'm one of *those* that live with this nearly daily. Thank you - I just saw there was a new RX APHTHASOL & prayed it was a small answer... One can hope.

Thanks for your help...

They're usually caused from a bacteria. Try putting rubbing alcohol via a q-tip on them at the first sign you're getting them. The trick is to get them early! It works for me. If you develop them, rinse your mouth with warm water with sea salt (don't use regular salt). Some people have canker sore onset from lemons or other acidic fruits or when they bite or get a cut in their mouth; that usually causes me to get them. Good luck!

Does this sound right that I get Cold Sores inside my mouth?
I am a 19 year old college female. As a college student I tend to find myself stressing out a lot, thinking this caused canker sores in my mouth often, like 2 sores per every 2 weeks. Over break, I made an appointment with my doctor. After examination, she said they aren't canker sores, but cold sores. She said it is related to when I was 6 months old and was diagnosed with herpes encephalitis. I fully recovered from that, but occasionally get seizures from that case, and now cold sores inside my mouth. She prescribed Famciclovir 1500mg at a sign of a break out, and Lidocaine Hydrochloride Oral Topical Solution(Viscous 2%) for temporary relief from the sores. Is this right that they are cold sores? I thought cold sores were fever blisters on the lip, outside the mouth?

Medical procedure in a hotel room?
This is nuts and I'll try to make it short.

Me: 25, born with bi-lateral club feet. Operated on at birth. My legs are operational, but get feet get sore after standing for more than an hour or so.

My mother: batshit crazy.

Here's what she recently proposed to me:

She has a friend, who goes into Mexico for some sort of pain treatments from a "Doctor" who is an American, but chooses to operate in Mexico because it's "cheaper"

Basically, my mom wants this "Doctor" to do one of these pain treatments on my feet. Now, since I don't have a passport, the "Doctor" has offered to cross the border and perform this procedure in a hotel room.

The cost by the way, is like $300, and my mom's friend wants to pay, knowing we can't afford it. I've never even met her friend and I really don't feel comfortable taking money like that.

Now, what is this procedure? from the "Doctors" web site, it appears it's a needle injection of Lidocaine and Dextrose. Lidocaine is just a local anesthetic, and Dextrose is another word for Glucose.

From what I've read, Lidocaine only lasts a few weeks to a few months, so it's useless if I have to continue going and paying the $300.

I definitely do not want to do this. This guy doesn't even seem like a real doctor. His web site says he started out as a Chiropractor and then has "various degrees in medicine"

I feel this is totally irresponsible for my Mother to spring something like this on me.

Am I right in wanting to tell her no?

She's one of these natural medicine people and is very stubborn. She will definitely hold this against me if I say no, but seriously, would any of you even consider something like this?

Please, do not even consider doing a surgical procedure in a hotel room. This guy doesn't sound legit either. He may be one of those "black-market doctors" who do amateur procedures for pay and the result is usually insufficient. Also, "various degrees in medicine?" How many MD's can this guy have? Is he also an RN? A NP? FAAN?

-I wouldn't trust him. And I don't know many doctors that have full-blown websites. Also, If his website encourages you to buy something (anything-even services), than this probably is not legitimate.

-Instead, I encourage you to go to a hospital or a REAL doctor's office.

What you are seeing on the web is talking about exposure to vapors of hydrochloric acid, not about taking pills with a meal. Sort of like saying you can't drink from the municipal water supply because it is treated with chlorine when we know that chlorine gas is poison, especially to babies.

However, if you are still concerned, there are alternatives. You can take digestive bitters (Chamomile, Chickory, Gentian or a product called Swedish Bitters) at the start of a meal to increase your production of HCL. Also very helpful to sip vinegar water with meals. Mix 2-3 teaspoons apple cider vinegar and equal amount of honey in a little hot water. After it's dissolved, add cool water until it tastes pleasant.

Is it ok to bring up reoccurring canker sores to my doctor?
I am a 19 year old college female. I have reoccurring canker sores in my mouth. I usually break out with canker sores at least twice a month. I have had canker sores since a little kid. But as a kid i would get a few break outs a year. Now breakouts seem to be more common and often. I already don't eat tomatoes, orange juice or pineapple, for i know these definitely bring on sores. Is it reasonable to bring this up to my doctor when i go home for break? Is it possible because they are recurrent there can be a topical medicine i put on the sore i get prescribed by the doctor to me? I have already tried hydrogen peroxide and Kank-a and Orajel, non of them working...Oh yeah i forgot...2 years ago my cheek swelled up and i went to the urgent care and was prescribed Lidocaine Hydrochloride to put on it to stop the swelling. But until it was out-dated it worked to get rid of canker sores faster. I do notice stress is a factor of canker sores, but i get 9 hours of sleep a night and work out to try to manage stress.

There is no physiological mechanism by which anyone can become addicted to paracetamol. There have been reports of addiction to combination products where paracetamol is combined with an opioid medicine, but this has nothing to do with the paracetamol component.
Phenylephrine hydrochloride has had cases of addiction however tolerance is more reported and is recognised in most countries as non addictive.
Im more concerned about diphenhydramine hydrochloride which continuous use of this medication can lead to dependency and addiction.

I suggest you seek medical help if you feel you are unable to stop taking this medication
