Is it safe if I smoke marijuana while taking Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim - oral?
Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim is an antibiotic for staff infection. I just want to know if its going to cause a adverse reaction like alcohol. I'm guessing its safe but I'm just getting a second opinion.

How long does it take antibiotics (Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole) to start working?
I started getting sick almost 2 weeks ago with cold like symptoms. I went to my doctor this past Tuesday and got prescribed an antibiotic (Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole). I still have to blow my nose every 5 minutes. I have been taking it for 2 days now. How long does it usually take before it starts clearing me up?

The antibiotic works immediately to destroy 3/4 of your immune system, your intestinal flora (friendly bacteria in your intestines). So the answer is immediate. Antibiotics cause the body to make macrophages that attack bacteria by eating them and then the body gets rid of this through the lymphatic system.

Antibiotics do NOT kill viruses. A cold is due to a virus, not bacteria. If your cold like symptoms are sinus, running nose, etc., most likely that is from a toxic liver. If you treat just the symptoms, like doctors are trained to do, you will not fix the problem. Doctors prescribe antibiotics like they were candy and are doing the public a lot of harm, simple as that.

A virus is a very complicated organism and there are over 200 viruses that cause the common cold. Any drugs you take to "RELIEVE" the symptoms of a cold will only prolong the cold, take a big toll on your immune system, and affect your overall health. Most people believe that if they feel good, they have solved their problem in regard to a cold.

Now that you have taken the antibiotic (anti = against, biotic = life), you need to fix the problems it caused. You can address the intestinal flora by taking a high quality probiotic (pro = for, biotic = life) for about 2 months or more. Eat lots of fermented foods and avoid all things that contain chlorine, fluoride (like toothpaste that contains that poison and fluoridated water, sodas, etc.)

If the symptoms you feel are sinus related, you have to clean up your liver. If it is just a cold virus, you can be well in a day or two by taking Nucleotides every 1/2 hour all your waking hours. Also, avoid taking ASCORBIC ACID that is sold as vitamin C that it is not. Ascorbic acid depletes your body of calcium and causes the vitamin C cofactors in your body to become deficient. Ascorbic acid won't even cure scuvy. I would also take a product that is high in Allicin that will attack biofilms that can harbor bacteria, viruses, etc.

It is also possible that you may have a fungus infection that antibiotics will not touch. That will have to be handled with a good diet and other herbs.

How long should I wait to drink after taking Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole & Trimethoprim)?
I had an ear infection two weeks ago and I was put on an antibiotic known as Bactrim/Septra (which contains Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim). Today is my last dose. Is it fine if I drink alcohol the day after (24 hours)?

bactrim's half life is around 10 hours. therefore, you should wait approximately 20 hours after you finished your course of antibiotic to start drinking. so the day after is fine. cheers, mate!

i know this sounds crazy but, i walked into a cactus tree that had thorns on it long as 3inches. now i am beginning to have pain, fever and swelling in the areas where they stuck me. my question is can SULFAMETHOXAZOLE TRIMETHOPRIM antibiotic prescription help treat this?

this is a sulfa drug and they are very specific in what they are used to treat.

you shouldn't take anything that was not prescribed for you. some people are allergic to sulfa drugs. and if this was prescribed for you~shame on you! you should have finished them for what they were originally prescribed for.

if you are having all the symptoms you described, you should go see your doctor ASAP and have him/ her prescribe the proper antibiotic for that injury.

why take something that won't work? and sulfa drugs are sometimes really hard on the tummy.

Hello,

Sulfamethoxazole, also known as Co-Trimoxazole in the UK, is a mixture of 2 different antibiotics in one tablet (or capsule).

The first drug is a Sulfa- drug, and the second drug is Trimethoprim. So Sulfatrimoxazole is Trimethoprim with another (Sulfa- ) drug thrown in.

The reason for mixing them, is that they both act to kill certain germs in exactly the same way, - it's to do with how these germs handle folic acid. So the germ-killing effect of the combination, is multiplied.

The Sulfa- drugs were around in the 1950's and 1960's, - way before Trimethoprim was first discovered, - and doctors used to give the Sulfa- drugs alone, because that's all they had at the time.

Unfortunately the Sulfa- drugs had some rare, but quite bad side-effects, like allergic skin reactions and 'Stevens-Johnson syndrome.' These side-effects can also be found in the combination Sulfamethoxazole, and that's partly why it's not used so much these days, - although it can be very effective in the right cases.

Antibiotics are used specific for the type of bacteria that causes the infection. Some antibiotics will not work where others will. Cultures need to be taken. Certain illnesses are usually receptive to certain antibiotics such as strep throat or an ear infection. The doctors usually prescribe the same each time. If you take antibiotics that are not receptive to the bacteria,no help will come from the medicine. When you take antibiotics for non bacterial infections such as the flu or a cold you cause bacteria to become more resistive to drugs, making it harder for antibiotics to work when they are needed.

Has anyone ever had sulfamethoxazole with trimethoprim [the oral kind], before?

this is a very good antibiotic. especially for lung and bladder infections. however, it is a sulfa drug. so beware if you know that you are allergic to any other sulfa drugs.

Can I take Co-Amoxiclav tablets and Trimethoprim tablets at the same time?
I was prescribed Trimethoprim to relax a painful temporo mandibular joint disfunction.
A week later I was diagnosed with a kidney infection (so I'm currently taking Co-Amoxiclav antibiotics for that).
I haven't taken any of the Trimethoprim tablets yet as I'm unsure of whether it's safe to mix the two medications...

I am taking the anti-biotic Sulfamethoxazole-Trimethoprim what should I do?
I have lost 2 pounds in a day.
I was 121 now I am 119.

Does this anti-biotic make you lose weight?
Since I have been on this anti-biotic I have had Appetite Lost, Diarrhea, Nausea, and Tiredness and Weakness.
Should I keep on with this medication?

Also, I do have depression, but since I have been on it, I have been way more depressed.

Yes do what the doctor says.. keep taking the medicine. if u have diarrhea and nausea then u are losing water. ( dehydrated) you need to drink more water. drink more gatorade if u can.. its all expected with any medicine. even though u dont feel like eating.. still try to eat.. and drink water.. lots of water bc that can make u fatigue.

it's generally used with sulfamethoxizole(together, that's bactrim)
trimethoprim kills only bacterial cells because of the enzyme it inhibits...humans i think don't have it...something to do with dihydrofolate reductase i think.

is trimeth/sulfa ds effective?
I was diagnosed with a severe sinus infection and cold today and the dr. gave me trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole antibiotic around 11am today. i went to work and ihad to go back home because i was feeling really sick, even after taking it along with acetaminophen for my fever and medication for the congestion. It is 12am of the next day and stil feel sick. i have taken the meds as prescribed.
how long will i have to wait until this takes effect? i dont wanna feel sick anymore like this. it took a beating out of me, and i still have to go back to work tomorrow....
is this antibiotic very effective or not??

I agree with "Nick". TMP-SMZ is one of the best meds for sinus infections, especially in someone who smokes. It takes 1-2 days for antibiotics to start working, longer to fully treat an infection. Have a bit of food in your stomach when you take it - it might help with any nausea you get because of the med. But, there are resistant bacteria to any antibiotic that is out there. If your symptoms are not beginning to improve after 3 days of the antibiotic, contact your physician.

for sinus infection what is better -Sulfamethoxazole-tmp OR Cefixime - anyone with personal experience?
I have sulfamethoxazole-tmp prescribed for a sinus infection right now, and i have had cefixime before for a urinary tract infection. the cefixime worked wonders and i didn't experience any side effects. which is rare because i always get weird and get side effects when i am on antibiotics. I know that both of those work for sinus infection, and i was thinking that maybe i hsould just take cefixime since i know i am not allergic to it or anything, and there's always a chance with new antibiotics that you'll have a bad exprience. has any of you tried sulfamethoxazole-tmp? are there any side effects? please let me know, any info or personal experience can help. thank you.

I've taken both, and never had any problems. But I prefer a "z-pack" (don't know the medical name, cause even my doctor calls it a "z-pack". It is a 6 pill, 5 day antibiotic where you take 2 pills the first day, and then one each day after that for 4 days.

I was prescribed by my doctor sulfameth/trimethoprim for symptoms of non specific urethritis. I've been taking them for over a week now, and have no relief. I did some web searching of my symptoms and the medication, and I've gathered that I might be on the wrong meds. Should I be on something like doxycyline?

Urologist prescribed suprax?
can anyone give me any advice on the following.

My urologist wrote me a prescription for a drug called suprax and told me to take it
for 4 weeks. I am hearing stories on the internet and according to a urologist on allexperts.com
Stephen Leslie he says that suprax is not used for prostatitis, The drug also costs $900

I am taking sulfamethoxazole tmp and the doctor told me to eat yogurt for my yest infection?
Ok, so I got lumps on my vagina for shaving and the doctor prescribed me sulfamethoxazole tmp. And because of those lumps, I got a yeast infection, so she gave me two pills for it.
She told me to drink lots of water and eat yogurt.
The yogurt I have is a probiotic, will that do something to me if I am taking antibiotics? Thanks.

The medication you are taking for the yeast infection will not only kill the yeast, but it will kill all the good bacteria we normally have in our system. The yogurt is to replace that good bacteria in your system and nothing more. It is important that you do eat the yogurt or take a probiotic when you are taking an antibiotic.

Has anybody experience side effects from taking sulfamethoxazole?
My dermatologist prescribed me sulfamethoxazole for acne and i feel weird! Tonight is my 3rd dose and i feel muscle weakness, light headed, nausea, a lil anxiety, heart is racing a bit. R these side effects common w/ this drug???

Tonight is my last dose cause i am not gonna tolerate these symptoms for the 30days 2 tabs daily treatment my dermatologist prescribed me! What a horrible drug!!!

I know this is an antibiotic and its know for making people a little queazy. Please don't take it on an empty stomach. I'm assuming your doctor told you you had as infection. If that is true this will definately help. And don't skip doses.

Bactrim DS which is the the name brand for this drug is available for IV ( intra venous) administration, but not for IM ( a shot in the muscle. So Yes, your 16 month old can recieve this drug and it is approved for usuage in their age for certain infections IV.

Help my eye is swollen!! ?

Never put anything in your eyes that you aren't familiar with as far as medications go without consulting a doctor first. Using warm compresses may help with pain but if swelling doesn't go away soon your best course of action would be going to an urgent care clinic and letting a doctor take a look. You may have gotten foreign matter in your eye that you can't see but that can be seen by a doctor with the appropriate examination equipment. I wouldn't let it go too long - you don't want anything affecting your vision permanently. Good Luck, feel better soon.

My doctor gave me...?
sulfamethoxazole, (also known as bactrium, bethaprim, cotrim, septra) for a uti. Has anyone ever taken this, and what was their experience with it? I'm afraid that it might make me sick to my stomach (I'm terrified of throwing up). So if you could just give me your experiences with this (good and bad, but I'd prefer good) I would be eternally grateful. Thanks so much.
